Owner description: Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). The YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield with sculpture by Sir William Reid-Dick, was unveiled by Lord Plumer on 24 July 1927. Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of the local Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.

“Inspiring and moving”
Reviewed March 22, 2013

A visit here should be compulsory for all children. The short memorial service and Last Post at 8pm every night, regardless of weather, will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. And if it does not also bring a tear to your eye, regardless of age, you are a very hard-nosed person indeed. The memorial itself is beautifully done and in keeping with all the cemeteries and memorials on the Western Front is immaculately maintained. A deeply respectful silent gathering was a sight to behold. As an Aussie it was a profound experience. (And a special mention to the immensely impressive Scots Guard Drum Major who very sharply told two schoolgirls who had the temerity to giggle to show some respect. It was a short sharp lesson for the children.)

Being a Canadian and seeing this site was amazing. Everything was so well kept and clean. It shows the great care taken by the War Graves Office.

“Impressive Memorial”

Truly an awesome tribute to the British soldier who went missing at the Ypres salient in WWI. 30,000+ names is a sobering reminder of the human cost of the Great War.

“Awe inspiring - Last Post every night”
Reviewed March 21, 2013

The Last Post is played every night at 8.00pm in respect of all who died for us. A very moving experience alongside an Aussie who came back after a previous visit.
