“Good Value friendly family hotel in centre of Ypres”
Reviewed May 21, 2009

I was touring the 1st World War battlefields with three friends and we stayed at the Old Tom for two nights on a half board basis. The hotel is well situated right in the centre of Ypres near to the In Flanders Fields Museum and close to shops, cafes and restaurants. The rooms we had (12 and 17) were adequate in size, very clean and had comfortable twin beds, with a good shower/toilet and TV. No. 12 overlooks the Groote Markt (main square), while No. 17 on the third floor is slightly smaller and might be a bit of a struggle for the elderly going up steepish stairs with a dodgy bannister. (Also, the town square can be a bit noisy at night with the local "yoof" testing their scooters round it - but don't let this put you off.) Breakfast was very good with cold meats and cheese, jam etc, and ample tea and coffee. The fixed menu half board dinner (3 courses) had 3 choices for the main course and was excellent in taste, presentation and value. House wine by the pichet was also good value . The a la carte menu had some tempting possibilities such as eels which are a speciality of the restaurant. The chef is proud of his culinary achievements and his diplomas and certificates are displayed around the restaurant. The service was friendly and helpful. The Old Tom also offers packed lunches for €10 which as well as two filled rolls included a couple of drinks and an apple and orange - it means if you are out in the country touring the battlefields you don't need to search for a cafe (scarce) or return to Ypres for lunch. We also made use of the hotel's secure underground garage (€9 per night) about 100 metres away, as the square was being prepared very early the next morning with stalls etc. for a forthcoming festival. (Normally you can park in the square overnight but charges apply after 0800 during the day until1800.) I recommend this hotel for people who will not be spending much time in the room, but still require clean, comfortable accommodation without any of the unneccessary fripperies and good value.

We stayed at the Old Tom last year and went back this year with our daughter and Son-in-Law. The Old Tom has lots going for it, but what it doesn't have is; smart check-in, lift, coffee/tea making facilities,sauna/pool or Sat/TV etc! What it does have is an ideal position, helpfull, friendly staff and great food. We stayed in room 13, again. It has had a makeover and is smarter than last year, but the view of the fire escape is the same (As is the wobbly bannister) The 'off-spring' were in No.14 which overlooks the Square. As it was All Saints there was no early morning market and was quite quiet. We were booked in as Half Board and the food was varied and excellent. Mussels, lemon sole, steaks, eel and even Hare fillets, cooked to perfection. We looked at the Novatel, as it is in a side street it will be quieter but if you want to stay in a red brick box - fine, but not for us! As the hotel doesn't have a TV in the bar, a plus point, we watched the Grand Prix at the Old Bill on the otherside of the square. Lots of ciggy smoke - what ban? - but if you want a Sports Bar this is about the only one in Ypres we have found. We visited the Passendale museum, which the best I have found in the area - it makes the so called museum at Hill 62 to appear for what it is - a rip off! The dug out in the basement is very well done, and was even highly approved of by the Royal Engineer in the party! The Yorkshire Trenches are worth a visit, and we would have liked to have visited the German Trenches as well. Unfortunately, to get in you need a code for the gate and this is only obtainable from the Tourist info. in Kemmel and this is closed on Public Holidays and only open 10-12 on Sundays.

We stayed at Old Tom for 6 nights, 28 August to 3 Sept 2008. We asked for a twin room (en suite) looking on to the Market 'Square'. The room was basic but very, very clean as was the whole Hotel. Obviously, there was a lot of noise until way after midnight and from about 6.00 a.m each morning but we knew this would be the case when we booked the room. In the early evening, watching the world go by from our windows was as we had imagined it would be - very enjoyable!

The staff were pleasant but very reserved and, when they were serving our evening meals, it often felt as if they were just "going through the motions", i.e for the most part, they did not communicate with us at all and, on a couple of occasions, the young man serving gave us no eye contact and almost threw the food at us as he went passed our table. Having said the above about the staff, we should add that they did warm to us and, by the last day, were actually smiling!

Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Old Tom and would definitely stay there again.

Stayed two nights 6/7 August 2008 - this Hotel was recommended by family members. Ideally situated to visit Flanders Fields War Grave sites/Menin Gate ceremony. We had Room 13 (!!) which was rather over-filled with slighlty aged furniture, but comfortable. Bathroom was purpose built, new and very functional. Breakfast was basic: bread rolls ham, cheese, jam, tea or coffee. Very reasonable rates. Enjoyed our stay.

The hotel has a great location on the main square in Ypres. The staff were friendly and the rooms were clean. The hotel is very basic but you get what you pay for.
You can park opposite the hotel for 1euro a night or you can request underground secure parking 300m from the hotel for 8euros a night.

The last post ceremony at 8pm every night (500m from the hotel) is worth a visit - very moving.

Would definately stay again.

The hotel is placed centrally and is clean. The staff are also friendly and helpful. We were placed at the back of the building in an attic with no window only a roof light so we had no views at all. The decor was tired and shabby and the hotel is in dire need of a lick of paint and refurbishment. Unless you are near the front of the building it is also very noisy with people walking past your room. There is no lift. The Novotel which is also in the centre of Ypres looked much nicer.
