“Great views!”

Don't miss going up to the Belfry when you visit the In Flanders Museum. Really nice views, especially if you like to take photos.

“Terrified of height ! Dreadful Vertigo !”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2014

Belfry at Flanders Field Museum ... don't do it if you are afraid of heights ! Snail enclosed staircase OK but stops in clock tower and instead there is an open snail style staircase made of metal, like a fire escape, where you can see straight down ... not for the faint hearted .... then another enclosed stairwell to balcony at top .. with windows and lots of wind ! Way down on other side .....

“Woah ... scary ... but in a good way!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2014

231 steps in confined, narrow spiral staircases, the first ones stone and the final stretch metal. The bells are well worth the climb and they're not loud enough to cause ear pain. The hand rails are knuckle grazers, you can see blood on the walls around them here and there. The view from the top is good and you can walk all round the steeple bit. Once will probably be enough but a great experience!

“Exercise and a view!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 29, 2013

If you can choose to do this on a clear day, and you are fit enough to cope with the 250+ steps, the you'll be rewarded with fine views of Ieper town and the surrounding countryside and Great War battlefields.

At the top, the walkway is narrow and not really suitable for those with limited manoeuvrability.

However, there are clear and useful information boards on each of the four sides of the tower, describing near and distant locations.

Our visit occurred on a damp day, and so although we had reasonable views of the town centre, the distant countryside was somewhat lost.

Overall, however, I'd recommend this experience, and I'm sure we'll do it again in better weather.
