“Excellent Hotel. Everything as stated in brochure.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2010

Excellent accomodation. Everything was exactly as stated in brochure. Breakfast included in price was excellent. Plenty of information regarding WW1 battlefieds and very short walk to centre and Menim Gate. Dined at Poppy Restaurant on each of three evenings, following service at Menim Gate. Will most certainly stay again on our next visit.

We arrived at the hotel on Easter Friday to stay until Easter Monday - when we checked in they said they were expecting us yesterday... oh dear we'd booked on the internet and got the dates wrong. No worries they rebooked us, didn't charge us for the lost night nor did they charge us full rate for the Sunday. Great for the children, breakfast was very generous and good and best of all didn't stop until 11am so no need to rush around in the morning.

We three gentlemen visiting Ypres - Hotel in a very central position
We asked reception for suitable room for three at a thier best rate
The Novetel receptionist must have noticed we all were of rotund stature and well over six feet tall -
Room offered was to the back of the building far away from the lifts or services -
Basic room looked out to a plain white wall -
One Double Bed and a Sofa Bed that pulls out to make two small childrens mattress Beds -
I felt it impossible for any adult ( let alone with our dimensions) to sleep for and hour let alone overnight
Very annoyed we three returned immediately to reception and check out with little if any apology
I strongly advise checking the room before booking in

Quick and to the point:

Service was good. Staff was effecient and freindly in all areas of the hotel that I used.

Room was large for the price. It had a double bed and a single bed with plenty of room for luggage and also space to move about with out feeling cramped.

The location was convenient to the to walk to the main market in the centre of the city. There was parking for our rental car underneath the hotel. I felt though that it was a kind low class to charge guests to park a car while they are staying at your hotel , but thats what they do. 11 euros for 24 hours.

The included breakfast was very good. Selection was good , the food was fresh and hot and the staff were very good in the restaurant as well.

I found no faults with this hotel.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 17, 2010

We have just returned from 3 nights at the Novotel in Ypres. The location was simply SUPERB - 100 yards from the main square and 200 yards from the Menin Gate.
It was an oasis of calm (despite a couple of school parties in while we were there, it being half term. I was surprised they took school parties but the students were very well behaved and we barely noticed them)

It's a 15 - 20 minute walk from the station but hauling cases along cobbled streets is quite tiring! It's very easy to find just off the main square.

We checked in very quickly and were pleased that our room had a view of St Jakob's Church at the rear of the hotel.

The room was standard Novotel, warm and comfortable, firm bed, plenty of space and the bathroom had an excellent shower and nice fluffy towels and some lovely toiletries.
The furnishings were decent and most importantly in temperatures of -5 degrees, we were WARM!

The supply of coffee and teabags was somewhat stingy and TAKE A TIP - take some of your own and milk.

The lifts were quick & quiet and there was FREE use of two computers near the dining area - excellent.

Breakfast was very good, nice fresh rolls, lots of assortment including cooked bacon, eggs, sausages, beans etc with cereals, yoghurts, fruit etc. More than adequate!

The prices for evening meals were WAY out of line with the excellent local restaurants though and despite intending to eat in the hotel we didn't at those prices.

We ate at Poppies one night (en route to the Menin Gate) and Le Trompet twice because the steaks and sauces in there were simply SUPERB. Both restaurants were very good value with similar prices and choices and that seemed to be the order of the day at most of the restaurants. Le Trompet is on the far side of the square, in front of the Cloth Hall, a fabulous ambience.

We went to the Menin Gate each evening (to make up for over half a century of not being there) and each night was different. The first night was a bad of Scottish pipers, the second night there were a LOT of British soldiers and the third night it was just the buglers and some children placing the wreaths. It is well attended and it is necessary to get there at about 20 minutes to 8pm to get a decent view.
It is amazing to think this takes place every single night of the year and has done for 80+ years.
The Menin Gate itself is awesome, bigger than expected and hugely imposing.

In Ypres itself we walked around the rampart walk (a couple of miles probably) and despite it being so bitterly cold, snowing and the water frozen over it was well worth it.
We also went in the excellent interactive In Flanders Fields Museum - worth every penny for innovation & originality.

There are several tour companies who do trips around the Ypres Salient and we went with Salient Tours based at The Grenadier Bookshop on Menin Street (about opposite Poppies restaurant)
It was a good tour of Essex Wood Farm where John Macrae wrote 'In Flanders Fields, the poppies blow...' and the Langemarck German cemetery which we found particularly interesting because we had only seen Commonwealth ones previously and the German one was really sad because it was dark & low key. Those German boys were loved by their German mothers too......

Tyne Cot Cemetery is massive - and so many of the graves are marked 'A soldier of the Great War - known unto God'. How terrible that some woman strove to give birth to a young man who doesn't have a marked grave.....I find the whole thing deeply upsetting.

It is very refreshing to see so many school parties and young people on the tours around the battlefields and at the Menin Gate.

We went to Ghent one day on the train and that was very easily done and very interesting apart from all the relaying of tramlines which in slushy snow meant a lot of MUD.
The St Barf's Cathedral is simply magnificent.

All in all we felt it was an excellent place to visit for a short break and we were particularly glad we stayed at the Novotel for comfort & convenience and we would recommend the whole experience to anyone else.
