One of the most picturesque resting places for our troops... wonderfully kept as all the cemetaries are in Belgium.

It was a hot day, so we decided to walk the Ramparts in the shade of the trees, We came to the Lille Gate, where so many young men left to go to war, never to return. Original signage on the gate, A Cosy Pub, with excellent beer and an entertaining 'Ramparts Museum'. But the jewel is the CWGC Ramparts Cemetery. Follow the path round to the entrance, as you enter you stop due to the heartstopping tranquility. The cemetery with its well kept lawns rolls down to the waters edge with weeping willows dipping into the water, and the small rows of pristine headstones. Walking around the cemetery beautiful and humbling. Also surprising was the number of NZ Maori Battallion buried there., so far from home, yet in the best of company.
I visited this year in April 2013, different weather, sombre but it still touched the soul.
We will remember them..

Went here on my solo bicycle tour of Belgium and the battle fields of WWI and WWII, and was overly impressed with this piece of history.

cemetery fits as part of the rampart walk, and is a most beautiful spot for those soldiers resting there. There are many much bigger and 'more important' war cemeteries around the area, especially Tyne Cot and Messines Ridge, but in it's context the Ramparts Cemetery is peaceful, special, and well worth a few minutes of your time.

We stayed at the Novotel Hotel and walked the Ramparts to the cemetery from the hotel. Such a picturesque tranquil walk.
