A chilling reminder of the power of undergruond mines. The remains of the German turned Allied bunker was interesting and the heavy snow on the ground the day we visited somehow softened the horror that is Hill 60. See the movie 'Beneath Hill 60' for an accurate depiction of what took place here so many years ago.

Whilst we didn't spend a lot of time here the significance of the Hill's history was not lost on us. To get a full appreciation of the crater's size walk down into it and/or have someone walk around it and stand directly opposite where you are positioned. It is huge and certainly brings home the carnage created by not only this explosion, but by the other 18 that were detonated at the same time. You can still see the concrete bunker and the immediate area is pock-marked by the many artillery barrages that were directed at this very strategic point. I understand that Hill 60 changed hands during WW1 about eight times - such was its importance.
Having previously seen the movie "Beneath Hill 60" was also beneficial in understanding what took place here.

Hill 60, or what remans of it, comprises a memorial and a lot of uneven and crater-ridden ground which is testament to the power of 450 tonnes of explosive used to blow a hole in the German front line. Other than the remains of an old German bunker, there is litle else to see - but if you know the story of Hill 60 and the brave Australian engineers who tunnelled under enemy lines with high explosive, you will be able to feel the devastation ofthe Germans and the elation of the allied forces.

From the top, the crater doesn't look that big but when you walk down into it and look up at people standing on the rim you get an idea of the scale for the first time.
A lot of the landscape is now being reclaimed by Nature. The Pillbox is now almost completely overgrown.

Go and walk round in silence and feel the history. There is such a feeling here from the obvious blasted landscape to poppies in trees and the Pillbox. A quite and lonely place. Something different during a day of museums.

The day we were there the tea room was closed so I can't review it
