This simple but very moving ceromony held at 8pm is a must if visitng Ypres. The area is always packed with lots of chatter & noise but the moment the first bugle sounds there is complete silence. The last time I went the lady next to me had tears running down her face as the soldier's history from the one picked each and every night of the year, was read out, and she was not the only one:
"A young private had been sent out with a small troop of men to hold a shell hole just 100 yards infront of the trench line. All were eventually killed".
That story is of course just one of thousands. The Menin Gate is listed with 58,000 names of soldiers who were "missing in action" but who's bodies were never found in that one area alone.
Everyone should attend at least once in their life time.More
