Allow plenty of time (at least half an hour early) to arrive if you want a good view.

After all the years the ceremony is still performed with total solemnity and honesty and is attended by locals as well as tourists.

A short but moving nightly ceremony, arrive before 7:30 pm if you wish to see the ceremony but just listen is amazing also. My mother in law was reduced to tears by the ceremony.

We were fortunate enough to attend a full ceremony, with cadets on parade, three singers and four buglars in dress uniform.
The ceremony was conducted in respectful silence, observed by both locals and tourists alike.
It is refreshing to think that this ceremony has been performed nearly 30,000 times and observed by the people of Ieper. A big thank you to them for their lasting devotion to the remembrance of times gone by.

ke sure you arrive at least 45 minutes before 8 pm and stand on righthand side when coming from Grote MArkt - for best view of the ceremony

I've stood under the gate many many times and listened to the last post. Every time i'm humbled to be there and pay my respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. I've stood there through icy blasts, lashing rain, brilliant sunshine, howling gales and at every time there must have been 100/200 people there, every night at all times of the year. We are going to be there on 11.11.2014....100 years since the start of WW1. It will be the most humbling experience.
