Owner description: Full scale reconstructions of war scenes, an extended collection of weapons, war equipment and photos make this museum to a true must-see!The chapel, in which the museum is located, dates back from the early twenties. This chapel was built directly across the Hooge Crater cemetery in memory of the many fallen soldiers on the battle fields of ‘Hooge’ over a period of 4 years. Rare military clothing of the troops, that where fighting in the ‘Ypres Salient’ (Ieperboog) are exposed in glass displays. Also you can see some full scale scenes of the Great War battle fields, very authentically reproduced. The theme of the scenes is very divers: German bunkers, British trenches and full scale horses with cavalry troops on their backs.

Nice private collection of artifacts but little about the crater. Well presented. The displays are presented in four languages that made it easy to understand.

A private museum open to the public with well presented displays and interesting artefacts. Opposite the Hooge Crater Cemetery so two sights can be visited on one trip.

The team at Hooge Crater Museum & Cafe are friendly and knowledgeable. Talk to Niek about the local battlefields and if he;s not busy you will be regaled by tales and information with pictures to boot. The meal/drink/museum deal is excellent value for money. The sandwiches are big enough for the healthiest of appetites. Parking is usually not a problem and there is lots to see near this spot; Hooge CWGC cemetery is across the road, a trench system is two minutes down the road and Railway Road CWGC cemetery is a short 15 minute stroll behind the cafe. Plus the onsite museum has lots of gems to keep the WW1 enthusiast busy. I look forward to a return visit soon.

Great museum - looks very small from outside but absolutely packed with artefacts and displays. Similar to other comments regarding there needing to be more descriptions of the exhibits but on the trip we did other museums - In Flanders Field and the Passchendale Museum - and it compared very favourably to both of them in terms of it having different/ interesting things on display and on price. One slight negative is the parking - it is on the side of the road so need to be careful with children.
The cemetry is exactly opposite the museum so can be visited at the same time.
There is an onsite cafe - we didn't eat there, only had a drink, but the food looked very good. It is also worth looking at the deal for museum entrance/ drink and food.
In summary - very cheap price for the museum and in the cafe and excellent exhibits displayed in nice surroundings - a must visit if you only have time to visit one museum in the Ypres area.

Lots of stuff to see, not that many descriptions. All the stuff inside is really interesting but could do with more information.

The crater is actually in the grounds of the hotel next door and are free to enter.

Be careful parking and try parking in one of the spaces at the side of the road rather than by the side of the museum.
