“Great introduction to the Ieper Salient”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2013

We spent 4 hours with Chris, our guide, who was most informative. His knowledge of the sites was extensive and he even had pictures to illustrate the sites at the time of the battles. His reverence for the fallen was notable. This was an excellent introduction to WWI. Don't the miss the "Last Post" at the Menin Gate at 8pm every night. We also enjoyed the Hooghe Crater museum.

“Very informative and educational”

In September 2013 I booked several WW1 battlefield tours in Ypres Belgium with Salient Tours led by Steve Douglas. In addition to the many tour highlights such as Essex Farm, The Brooding Soldier Memorial, Tyne Cot Cemetery, The Caterpiller, Vimy Memorial, Steve included other interesting sites. We saw the area where Allied and German troops celebrated Christmas together in the first year of the war, other military cemeteries including Commonwealth and German and of course the extraordinary tunnelling under the Town of Arras.
The tours are a very moving experience. Steve's extensive knowledge of WW1 battles and his informative use of charts, maps and many legends and anecdotes brings the experience to life. I would recommend Salient Tours and Steve Douglas to anyone planning to tour the WW1 battlefields.

“Canadian Approved!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2013

We had 2.5 days to spend in Ieper and thankfully, we chose to spend 2 of them with Steve. Day 1 we did the 2 Salient area tours, morning and afternoon, which were very informative. I left with a clearer understanding of both the war and war memorials (commonwealth and German). Although Steve is a Canadian and the bulk of the information focuses on Canadians in the war, we also learnt about German aspects as well. For this tour there were two vans of max 8 people each. This tour size was perfect, not too large and impersonal but small enough to get to know each other and the guide. For the price, this tour offers much more than expected; Steve was passionate, humorous and willing to answer most questions. He was very honest and would tell us if he didn't know the answer which we respected as he can't possibly know it all. There were some options given to us as well regarding visiting some sites that charge extra admittance (trenches). Steve asked the group if we wanted to pay the extra euro or two and offered alternatives if anyone was against it. No one opted not to attend.
Day 2, we went to Vimy Ridge. This was an all day tour that included Vimy as well various other sites on the Somme. although the ticket price was higher than the previous days' tours, this included lunch as well as a special treat at the end. The information shared throughout the day was memorable and the entire experience was humbling to say the least. This is a long day and by the end most of us were asleep in the van; however, it was not too hectic and although moments were rushed at times, the overall pace was good. We even found time to do the Flanders Shuffle.
Make sure you bring a fully charged camera or two, a jacket, and wear good walking shoes.

“Informative, interesting and well illustrated!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2013

Great whole day spent (on two different tours but with same guide and same group as all signed up for pm visit after am tour) visiting a variety of locations from cemeteries (both Commonwealth and German) to dressing stations, craters, trenches (both Commonwealth and German), a church and various battle sites and memorials. I learned so much as Steve had stories, maps and diagrams to fill in the background to what happened, where and why. There is something for everyone and many memorable locations and battles covered. A humbling and informative day .... we even went on a scavenge hunt for WW1 artefacts!!

Really good day with Salient Tours. Gave us a real feeling for what it was like on the Western Front. Steve tailored the tour to individual needs. Great insights, humour and knowledge. Would strongly recommend.
