“Best Roast Chicken in Belgium”
Reviewed October 27, 2013

Whether your staying at the hotel, visiting Menin gate or simply wandering the town you must stop and have a meal of their roast chicken, fries and salad. SIMPLY THE BEST :-)
I stayed at the hotel for 4 nights. There was an noise issue with a neighbouring hotel however the problem was fixed immedialey and I was moved to another room on request. Breakfast is fairly simple but plentiful to start your day. Centrally located on Grote Markt square and within minutes walk to Menin Gate, Cloth hall, Flanders field museum amoung a few. If your looking for a central location, good food, helpful staff at excellant rates then you can't go past this Hotel.
Thanks Paul

We have stayed in this hotel for a few days each year for 20 years; The staff are always extremely helpful and friendly. The food is always well cooked and presented nicely. No reasonable requests are ever refused. Our room was bright, spotlessly clean and had a huge comfortable bed.

We have stayed in wonderful hotels Switzerland, Austria, & Germany and have had breakfasts and evening meals to die for (at a price) However, when in Ieper we would not stay or eat anywhere else. Believe me I could tell you of other hotel nearby where the food is terrible, staff rude and rooms that you would not put a pet dog in.

People who complain should be prepared to thrust their hands a little deeper in their pockets and go somewhere else. Although a higher price is not a guarantee you will have somewhere better.

One should not come to Ieper to complain, one should come to honour the people who fought and died to give us all a better life. They had to put up with far worse than any of us could ever imagine.

Room Tip: I personally think front facing rooms are best and nowadays don't find it too noisy. Having said...

Considering where it was, the prices were very fair. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The food was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. When we visit Ypres again, we would definitely eat here again.

Room Tip: We did not stay here, only eat on Saturday evening, but if the restaurant was anything to go by, the...

Just like say that our stay at hotel Gasthof't Zweerd in Ypres was very pleasant, we have stayed there many times before, you are made very welcome by the friendly staff, I will not hesitate in staying there again I can certainly recommend, it is rite in the centre of Ypres on Grote Markt square beside the Menin Gate.

Room Tip: Front rooms look on to Grote Market Square

The hotel is ideally situated in the centre of the main square of Ypres. Two minute walk to the Menin Gate and Cloth Hall, and ideally situated for touring the battlefields etc.

However, I was disappointed with the hotel. It is tired and in desperate need of refurbishing. The stairwell and hallways are dark and depressing with dirty carpets. The rooms are small, again with depressing décor and basic en-suite facilities. As another reviewer commented, it is reminiscent of student digs or a hostel.

Breakfast is basic, just bread rolls, cheese, ham, croissants, jam, coffee & orange juice. I was expecting more variety than this. We didn't eat in the hotel apart from breakfast so cannot comment on their food apart from this.

I found the proprietor also to be rather miserable, but maybe he was having an off day!

Ypres is a lovely place to visit, but I would not return to this hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel are much quieter but have no view over the square.

We apologise that your expectance was not willed
In. On the time
Of your stay the owner was actually recovering from heavy chemotherapy but as he is a worker in heart and lungs we can not stop him from helping us wherever he can.

For a more unpersonal and stiffer service please next time do
Not choose a cheap 2 star family hotel like ours where people do not live as machines , but go for a minimum of 3 star chainhotel!

Thank you

Well located in the centre near the Menin Gate and on the main square. NOTE. THE SQUARE IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR PARKING ON A FRIDAY NIGHT AS THE SATURDAY MARKET SET UP EARLY IN THE MORNING. PENALTY IS HIGH, We ate in the hotel which was fine. The rooms were OK, those at the rear are more quiet and may have been refurbished recenly. There is a large dining room for parrty bookings but it did not disturb us. I exepct that this is a very busy hotel in season but also for those visiting the memorials and cemeteries and in 2014 this will be a very busy area.
A nice city and well worth visiting.

Room Tip: Book a rear room if you can, and if your are traveling single they do have some single rooms.

Booked to tour the battlefields of the ypres salient and Somme.ideal location clean beds and fresh towels every day.to be honest I didn't go there to look at the view out of the window.i had a view of the square, there's only so many bloody mopeds and people on push bikes that you can look at,see one see them all.if people want a good view go downstairs and sit in the lovely conservatory with a nice cold beer.as for the dirty carpets on the stairs, well,I'm not there to chew on those.get a life.
The breakfast was two FRESH rolls some cheese and jam,I loved the apricot jam.it kept me going all day. I had a fantastic meal of mussels cooked with veg and my friends who are not accustomed to fine food as I had chicken with salad and chips which was as they said delicious.
I'm sure the rooms at the hotel were much better than the conditions that the soldiers of 1914-18 had to live and sleep in.Another thing no bugger was lobbing shells and shooting at us!
If you want to stay inside the hotel all day reading the times or woman's own then this is not the hotel for you, come to think of it why the hell bother going to Ypres if you want to stay inside all day.
Oh by the way,I did see a cobweb outside the window ,it had a poor bluebottle ensnared in it,I did think about saving it but thought to myself that at least I have had an apricot and cheese roll, much better than a pesky fly.
At the end of the day I could not fault the hotel (the soap did taste funny though when I accidentally got some in my mouth in the lovely shower, but that's another story!!!!) .if you want somewhere central to stay to visit the ypres salient ,this place is ideal( if you do not know what a salient is,you should be on the costa del sol with the rest of the lager louts)
That is my opinion,oh maybe the blonde woman behind the bar could of smiled a bit more, she did once but I'm sure it was wind!

Room Tip: Room 103 ideal
