Just like say that our stay at hotel Gasthof't Zweerd in Ypres was very pleasant, we have stayed there many times before, you are made very welcome by the friendly staff, I will not hesitate in staying there again I can certainly recommend, it is rite in the centre of Ypres on Grote Markt square beside the Menin Gate.

Room Tip: Front rooms look on to Grote Market Square

The hotel is ideally situated in the centre of the main square of Ypres. Two minute walk to the Menin Gate and Cloth Hall, and ideally situated for touring the battlefields etc.

However, I was disappointed with the hotel. It is tired and in desperate need of refurbishing. The stairwell and hallways are dark and depressing with dirty carpets. The rooms are small, again with depressing décor and basic en-suite facilities. As another reviewer commented, it is reminiscent of student digs or a hostel.

Breakfast is basic, just bread rolls, cheese, ham, croissants, jam, coffee & orange juice. I was expecting more variety than this. We didn't eat in the hotel apart from breakfast so cannot comment on their food apart from this.

I found the proprietor also to be rather miserable, but maybe he was having an off day!

Ypres is a lovely place to visit, but I would not return to this hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel are much quieter but have no view over the square.

We apologise that your expectance was not willed
In. On the time
Of your stay the owner was actually recovering from heavy chemotherapy but as he is a worker in heart and lungs we can not stop him from helping us wherever he can.

For a more unpersonal and stiffer service please next time do
Not choose a cheap 2 star family hotel like ours where people do not live as machines , but go for a minimum of 3 star chainhotel!

Thank you

Well located in the centre near the Menin Gate and on the main square. NOTE. THE SQUARE IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR PARKING ON A FRIDAY NIGHT AS THE SATURDAY MARKET SET UP EARLY IN THE MORNING. PENALTY IS HIGH, We ate in the hotel which was fine. The rooms were OK, those at the rear are more quiet and may have been refurbished recenly. There is a large dining room for parrty bookings but it did not disturb us. I exepct that this is a very busy hotel in season but also for those visiting the memorials and cemeteries and in 2014 this will be a very busy area.
A nice city and well worth visiting.

Room Tip: Book a rear room if you can, and if your are traveling single they do have some single rooms.

Booked to tour the battlefields of the ypres salient and Somme.ideal location clean beds and fresh towels every day.to be honest I didn't go there to look at the view out of the window.i had a view of the square, there's only so many bloody mopeds and people on push bikes that you can look at,see one see them all.if people want a good view go downstairs and sit in the lovely conservatory with a nice cold beer.as for the dirty carpets on the stairs, well,I'm not there to chew on those.get a life.
The breakfast was two FRESH rolls some cheese and jam,I loved the apricot jam.it kept me going all day. I had a fantastic meal of mussels cooked with veg and my friends who are not accustomed to fine food as I had chicken with salad and chips which was as they said delicious.
I'm sure the rooms at the hotel were much better than the conditions that the soldiers of 1914-18 had to live and sleep in.Another thing no bugger was lobbing shells and shooting at us!
If you want to stay inside the hotel all day reading the times or woman's own then this is not the hotel for you, come to think of it why the hell bother going to Ypres if you want to stay inside all day.
Oh by the way,I did see a cobweb outside the window ,it had a poor bluebottle ensnared in it,I did think about saving it but thought to myself that at least I have had an apricot and cheese roll, much better than a pesky fly.
At the end of the day I could not fault the hotel (the soap did taste funny though when I accidentally got some in my mouth in the lovely shower, but that's another story!!!!) .if you want somewhere central to stay to visit the ypres salient ,this place is ideal( if you do not know what a salient is,you should be on the costa del sol with the rest of the lager louts)
That is my opinion,oh maybe the blonde woman behind the bar could of smiled a bit more, she did once but I'm sure it was wind!

Room Tip: Room 103 ideal

We were a family of four and stayed for two nights touring WW1 sites.
The location of this hotel is fantastic on the main square , near the Cloth Hall and Menin gate.
The hotel receptionist was very friendly. We had a lovely lunch on arrival and would recommend the mussles in white wine. The restaurant /bar area is very nice.
The room:
The room was miserable up in the attic at the back of the building.
Iron bunk beds, cheap laminate flooring laid ontop of old carpet.
Tiny ensuite, laminate floor must have run out as it is only laid on half the ensuite, with dirty carpet under the toilet. It was like a poor quality youth hostel.
We stayed here 13 yrs ago in a nicer room facing the square so we were dissapointed with this room.
Breakfast was two bread rolls and a pastry , juice and coffee. Average continental.
The whole place needs a lick of paint and new floor covering in the hall ways and bedrooms.
It could be so much nicer.

Stayed here as a base for touring the WW1 sites. It has an excellent location and is central to the bars, restaurants and visitor sites in the town. The room decor seemed a bit 'tired' but other than that it was clean, airy and well equipped. The hotel generally is a bit this way but it did not bother me as much as some other reviewers, it was a base to do a job and suited the purpose well. We stayed a few nights and had room service every day, clean towels etc.. Very helpful, friendly staff. This is not the Savoy so I don't expect it to be that standard but it is a long way from that price. The evening meals available compared favourably to all the other restaurants and hotels in the area that we tried, all very much of a similar good standard. I would readily stay here again.

I’ve stayed in the Zweerd a couple of times when doing tours of the trenches. The first time ten years ago, the last time this Easter. And I don’t think it has been given a coat of paint since. But – apart from this slight feeling of neglect - perfectly adequate for what we wanted. It was clean and reasonably priced. We didn’t have dinner but the breakfasts were fine. The landlord is easy going and accommodating – if a little humourless. And a fantastic location in the Market Square a few minutes’ walk from the Menin Gate. Couldn’t be more convenient. Would certainly stay again.
