We changed our itinerary to visit Ypres for a day. We contacted Frontline Tours to make our reservation and received a patient and professional response. Lionel our guide was friendly, knowledgable and respectful. He is good with names of participants and answers questions with detail which displays a deep understanding of the events surrounding WWI. We were very impressed with our tour and recommend this highly. You may wish to ask of the war on his own family - and interesting story in itself.

Lionel, who runs Frontline Tours is an excellent guide of the Flanders battlefields. We booked a tour through Lionel via internet. This was so easy as both his written and spoken English is perfect.

We stayed at Varlet Farm (the ONLY place to stay, Fantastic) and we were picked up at the farm by Lionel in an airconditioned Mercedes Mini Bus. Our tour lasted the whole day, from 9 until 5 but Lionel offers 2/4 and 6 hour tours as well as the full day tour. The Flanders battlefields are in a comparatively small area in that despite the terrible loss of lives, the battle actually moved back and forth in a confined corridor from 1914 to 1918. Therefore, we were able to see and awful lot of what was left to see of the WW1 battlefields of Flanders during our tour with Lionel.

The sites and museums are very well kept and highly informative. Of course, the cemetaries and monuments are looked after by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission who do a splended job ensuring that those who gave their young lives can rest in peace but hopefully never be forgotten (most were under 22 years old). It was particularly heart warming to see a minibus of children from the UK and suffering from various levels of learning difficulties having a great time exploring the trenches at one of the museums we visited, there behavior was exemplarary and a lesson to so called 'normal kids' in respect and manners for the things they were there to see.

There was no break for lunch so I would suggest that hose who opt for the full day tour take a packed lunch with them, Lionel didn't seem to mind us eating our lunch in his immaculate bus!

Lionel has put a lot of work into making his tours smooth and informative. He clearly knows his subject well and the tour was extremely good. He is preparing another tour to add for next year called something like 'In Churchill and Hitlers footsteps' as both WW2 leaders served in Flanders during WW1. We are looking forward to joining that tour next time we visit Ypres.

Lionel's Frontline Tours coupled with a stay at Charlotte's B and B Varlet Farm (see reviews in Trip Advisor) was a winning combination and a visit we will remember for the rest of our lives,

On 22nd August 2009 we went on a 6 hour tour of the north & south Ypres salients with Lionel, the owner of Frontline tours. Pre-arrangements by phone & e-mail were straightforward as Lionel speaks excellent English. We were collected promptly from our hotel in a comfortable, air conditioned Mercedes minibus. As we were "first timers", Lionel spent a little time giving us an overview and then we were off. We visited a variety of interesting sites and his knowledge was tremendous. I would not hesitate to recommend this company. Thank you Lionel.
