Having just been to Belgium for the first time ever with a group from work who have been on a number of occasions, a friend said we would be dining on the Friday evening at a local steak house just round the corner from our hotel, the Ostend Hotel.
We went around to book a table for 12 and were placed on the top balcony at the front of the building overlooking the whole of the pub.
The open fronted fire at the back of the premises as you walk in is really nice and the atmosphere is also good.
We dined a little early but had to to ensure we could get the group of 12 all together.
The internal open balcony with the big table on is different and for my meal I chose the mixed grill.
I was a little dubious as sometimes back home, mixed grills can be a little on the large side and too much, this however was completely different and just enough with a small mixed meat kebab accompanied by a series of other meats and chops which werent too big and overpowering.
If I return with our group in 2013, I will be suggesting we attend at Den Artiest.

I'm a local in Ostend and this one is considered to be a classic in Ostend. It has the atmosphere of a good old fashioned 'brown' pub and if you're visiting during Christmas holiday, be sure to check out the gigantic christmas tree. NIce selection of good belgian beers and griilfood.

a beautiful old glass factory is now a café/restaurant with good food and a good atmosphere. The perfect place for a relaxing evening with food, drinks and music for a good price.

Loved the open grill, where you can watch the chef cooking your food. Lots of different levels, including an inside balcony that overlooks the bar where you can sit and people watch!

Good selection of drinks, including lots of beers, spirits, wine and champagne.

We have been many times before, and we will keep going back!

Atmosphere

The decoration of the restaurant is really beautiful, it'd be a nice cozy place if it wouldn't be so busy. If you want to make sure you get a table, you better make a reservation, it's quite busy, mainly during the weekend. The tables are rather close to each other. The waiters are correct but not too friendly. The fact of the grill being in the restaurant, which makes sure you can see the chef preparing the meat is a nice extra.

Food

The quality and quantity of the food is ok, but it's nothing special. I didn't leave hungry, but wouldn't mind a little extra. My wife had asked her meat "bien cuit" and got "saignant", that's not a huge deal though it's a pitty. They served the dish with fries and a salad. We drank a bottle of the house wine and took the mixed grill, payed about 50 Euro's for two, so that's quite acceptable for what you get.

Conclusion

When you're in Oostende, you should pass by the place, not necessarily to eat anything, because that's not a huge deal, though to see the place and have a drink, if you come for a special Belgian beer there's also better places to find just as for the food, the place has to live from it's "decor".
