We have just returned from a 4 day trip organised by Majestic tours. What an ideally situated hotel! About 200 metres from the beach and a similar distance from the shops etc.
Everywhere is on nearly flat ground in Ostend, except a slight slope to the beach area.
The food at the hotel is really quite good.
Continental breakfast The usual choice of cereals. A good selection of bread and rolls. There is cheese, meats and boiled eggs. Also fruit and yogurts.
There is a set evening meal at 6.30 pm. Guests sit at tables for 6 persons. Starters is soup or salad. The waiter then brings the fish or meat of the day on a large plate accompanied with dishfuls of potatoes and vegetables. Always plenty to go around, and second helpings for those that so wish! You are given a choice of the dessert of the day or cheese and biscuits.
Meals were served quickly and efficiently. I will give credit to the waiters who besides being efficient were always very polite and pleasant.
Evening entertainment was an organist, and for the first night a singer. Drinks were included in our tour package from 8.30 pm. We found the barman to be very good.
We had a double room - 204 - overlooking the main road. A bit noisy at night, but not a big problem. The room however was very cramped, as was the bathroom. Having said that, the room was clean with a good bed, linen and towels. A good TV with BBC and ITV channels. No coffee or tea making facilities.
Both lifts were working in the hotel. Very old fashioned - but they worked! This is important as you have to take your own cases to and from your room and you could be on the 4th floor!
Another good point about this hotel is that the coach can stop right outside the entrance. Very convenient.
Many guests at the hotel were on repeat visits. We hope to return ourselves in the near future.
To summarise - This is a clean, well organised, and efficiently run hotel. The situation for a few days holiday couldn't be better. Ideal for trips to Brugge, Ghent, Brussels etc.

Room Tip: A room larger than 204 in the front of the hotel.

We have just returned from a trip to this hotel with National holidays. The hotel was fine not as bad as some of the reviews. The rooms facing the front are better and beds were comfy. The salad bar/breakfast bar is a bit of a bottle neck. Situated right beside a table where guests have to eat and very cramped. This would put you of using it as everyone was almost standing on top of one another just to get some salad. There was an hours free bar in the evening and Oh boy was the bar man grumpy, his attitude alone would put me off going back there. I asked for a cola and once i got it found out it was pepsi, i cant drink pepsi and he refused to give me another drink till i drank the pepsi and handed over an empty glass now come on if i dont like it how can i drink it. My husband had to take back his empty beer glass and have it refilled Nope he did not wash them just refilled it, and he never cracked a smile the full time we were there. I am a customer service manager and if he worked for me he would be sacked. overall it was an ok break for the price you pay but dont expect a smile or good service from the grumpy barman. He is Not a good advertisment for your hotel.

Room Tip: get a room facing the front

Just returned from the New Astoria on a National Holiday tour. This was our 4th stay at this hotel with National Holidays and having read the other reviews I can appreciate other peoples views. We have always had a pleasant stay and on this occasion got one of the smaller rooms, but it was clean with fresh towels every day and the beds are clean and comfortable The hotel is not as run down as some reviews state, the lifts are outdated I agree and the corridors are not half as bad as some reviews say.The evening meal is a set menu for coach parties, soup or salad for a starter, meat and 2 veg and a dessert or cheese and biscuits and they come round with second helpings, you also get a glass of wine. The food is basic but it is quite edible and plentiful, if you want better then book independently and pay for the A-La Carte menu. You do share a table with other people from your coach party which is your table for your stay. The staff are friendly and very helpful and if the weather is bad there are plenty places in Ostend to look round rather than being miserable in the hotel. We have stayed in worse 3 star hotels in the U.K and we will be going again next year to this hotel with National holidays. The coach tour operators offer bargain breaks so don't expect 4 star hotels, we find this hotel o.k and have never been disappointed here.

Room Tip: Front facing rooms are the best

We decided to try Caledonian Travel for a trip to Ostend. I wish we had taken on board the reviews and not gone ahead. Our room was cramped and had half-swing doors for the bathroom!!! The food was ok and the staff very pleasant but this did not compensate for the run down state of the hotel. We looked at the sister hotel nearby and it was just as bad. Beginning to accept that the bus tours have not done their homework regarding hotels. On speaking to other people they say the same. I have spent hours on laptop checking out all over Britain and come to the same conclusion There was one but lo and behold it was cancelled because lack of interest!!!!!!!!!!!! Forget about the NEW Astoria if thinking about going to Ostend. The weather was awful so was more or less stuck in hotel.

Room Tip: I wouldn't recommend any!!

the hotel is very hit or miss. We stayed here during the week and asked for a room with a balcony. There were only two of us and yet we were given a balcony family room which made our stay very comfortable. Some people did have a few horror stories of tiny rooms that they had paid single supplements for and were not really big for one person. Also people had the swinging doors on the bathroom doors. We were lucky. the bathroom was small and the shower wasn't great but we did have a comfortable stay. We travelled as part of a coach group and we had to sit on the same table for dinner with others from the coach trip. The food was ok, nothing amazing but edible and saved us a lot of money, even if it was served rather early for me at 6.30. The hotel is ideally situated for Ostend. There are plenty of bars and restaurants within easy walking distance, you can walk to most of the sights and the train station. The beach is at the end of the road. staff were generally helpful, and the waiter staff in there restaurant are lovely.

Room Tip: room 406 is a family room, and I believe 206, 306, 506 are also family rooms. If only two of you tra...

Visited during August on a 2 night weekend stay. Travelled with a coach full of Welsh people from south Wales. The coach trip was mainly good, apart from an irritating busy body who sat in front of us, and knew everything there was to know about the trip.
The hotel itself is well positioned for walking into the centre of everything. But to be honest that's all it has to offer.
There was only one lift working, which was a nightmare on arrival, as everyone was trying to get to their rooms with suitcases and then get to dinner before it was too late. Our meal time was 6pm and we only arrived at 5.40pm!
The room looked out onto a dark alleyway, dirty windows and a window that didn't open. The room was very warm, especially at night.
The bathroom was very small and poorly lit. There was no solid door to the bathroom, just a 'saloon' swing door, which you had to battle with each time you entered the bathroom. It didn't give you any toilet privacy at all!
The corridors were poorly lit also, and carpets that were well worn and dirty.
The restaurant was in two areas, a larger well lit area to the front of the hotel and a smaller not very well lit area at the back near the kitchens.
It was the latter of the two areas that we had to have our meals in. The breakfast was buffet, unless you prepaid 5 euros for a full English breakfast. The buffet breakfast consisted of the usual continental style things. The evening meal was only one choice and not very exciting. The first evening was slices of pork with crispy potatoes and very sweet carrots mixed with onion. The second evening was fried fish, very greasy, and chips and very sweet peas mixed with onions again. Both myself and partner don't eat fish and nothing else was offered. So we walked out and found a restaurant nearby.
The staff in the restaurant were always in a hurry and looked stressed, and one of the waitresses was very rude to us, dictating which table we should sit at. She wouldn't allow us to sit on our own, we had to share a table with 4 other people.
I enjoyed the weekend break, but I wouldn't go back to that particular hotel.

Spent a long weekend here, hotel is obviously used for coach parties which was fine by us as we tended to leave early morning and not return till late. Rooms are a bit dated and bathroom was very small with poor lighting. Breakfasts had plenty on offfer, nice pleasant staff. Noise from street can be a problem especially if like us you wanted the windows open.
