Royal Astrid Hotel
Ranked #12 of 46 Hotels in Ostend
Reviewed July 22, 2013

My husband and I stayed at the Royal Astrid with a Just Go Holiday group for six days. The hotel is conveniently located and the coach had a wide space to drop off and pick up passengers. The coach parking was a 20 minute walk away for the driver. The hotel is in walking distance to the beach and the tram.

The staff was very helpful. Check in and check out was easy. Reception gave out information when asked. They provided maps of Ostend.

Our room was on the 4th floor. It was a warm July day when we arrived after a very long coach ride. When I entered the clean, modern room it was hot and stuffy. There was no air conditioning, which was the only thing I found wrong with the room. There was one small window that could be opened and then the large window flipped out into the room. We were on a noisy street, which caused some problems with sleeping (people walking by and talking, cars blowing their horns, fire works, etc.). There was plenty of storage with shelves and two places for hanging clothes, but very few hangers. There was also a table with two chairs. There was a telephone and a safe in the room. A flat screen television was located on the wall. The programming included two English speaking channels (BBC) along with other languages.

Two towels and two hand towels were provided and changed daily. In the bathroom there was two plastic cups, two plastic shower caps and shoe shining pads. There was a bath tub and shower combination which I enjoy since I like a bath. The bathroom was clean and modern.

The hallway was wide. On the fourth floor it looked as if someone had spilled something all the way down the hallway. There were two elevators or lifts in the lobby area which were slow and only 4 people could get in one elevator. There is another lift available beyond the dining area near the computer corner and toilets at the back of the hotel which we used since no one seemed to have found this one.

As I mentioned before, there is a Computer Corner located beyond the dining area where we used free Internet. There is also wifi in the room, if a person pays 5 euros for a week. There's also a fitness area and swimming pool which we didn't locate.

Breakfast was a very large buffet. Everyone in our group loved the wide varieties of food available. Supper was also provided for us and each night the food was delightful. It started out with soup and salad. Then a different meat nightly (chicken, steak, hamburger, fish), with vegetables and a dessert. All of it was delicious and the portions were more than one could eat.

The area was fun to explore with the beach, the marina, streets with old buildings as well as new, statues, parks, street markets and plenty of shopping.

Watch out for the bicycles. Bicycle riders are everywhere and they have the right of way. Some of the paths for walkers are dirt, while the bike paths are paved. On cross walks cars must stop for bicycles and walkers, which causes people and bikes to go across without even looking, which causes driving difficult at times when there are lots of people on the move.

Overall, I would recommend the Royal Astrid for a week's stay.

Spa and swimming pools have been renovated and are fine, but the rooms are desperately in need of refurbishing, sanitary needs replacing. This is like an old car with new flashy wheels: looks tempting from a distance but is a desillusion when you're driving it.

Rooms should be ready from 3 o'clock in the afternoon but weren't: we had to wait for another hour. A curtain was missing in our room: after remarking it to the front desk, it could only be replaced next day?

No airco in the rooms, so it can get hot in there.

Beds were too hard for me, cushions too flat.

Breakfast is mainstream average, dinner was ok I guess, but don't expect haute cuisine.

I would suggest to avoid this hotel. It's adequate thats the best i can say. But the room was hot, so you have to leave your window open and then invite mosquitos in. There's no kettle in your room which isn't great when you have a 6 months old as we do. The food was poor, there where ciggarette butts left on our balcony, and when we checked out I was charged for the babys crib, this wasn't mentioned when checking in, so we were not able to make an informed choice. The staff were OK, no rude but not particually helpful either. All in all, I'd recommend choosing somewhere else.

We had talked to people on the coach, and were happy on our long tables, I could see that it might not suit retiring people. I was the only one with a comment about the food, as I had to wait ages for my vegetarian meal. The others were quite happy. The rooms were cleaned, and the hotel is only minutes from the promenade. This was great for an evening stroll. The hotel was a good basis for what we came to Ostend for, which was a base for sightseeing tours.

Room Tip: At the back (i.e.not on Wellingtonstraat), as quieter.

Arrived at 18.40 after 12 hour coach journey. On arrival was told immediately to go to the dining room for dinner. We were NOT allowed time to even brush our teeth or wash up. We were seated on tables of 8 (at that time we didn't know anyone). The meal was pretty average as was all the food for the 4 days. Breakfast was okay, as was Starter and Dessert but the main course was !!!!.
This is a shame because the hotel itself is fine, situated only 50 metres from a very nice beach. Our room was very spacious and had everything we needed, except a kettle etc. The staff are excellent and very helpful, but they are also very overworked and seem to do a bit of everything. Housekeeping was good with new towels every day and a comfortable bed.

Room Tip: Speaking to other guests most rooms seem quite spacious but are on the street.

We have just returned from a 5 day break with Shearings at this hotel. My opinion of the hotel is mixed. The room we had was great. It was spacious, clean, modern and very comfortable and the bathroom was particularly impressive. We didn't have a sea view but, as we were at the front of the hotel it was fairly quiet. However, my main criticism would be the food. Upon arrival at 7 o'clock we were herded straight into the dining room for dinner. This gave us no chance to freshen up and at this point we hadn't even seen our room. Everything about this meal was rushed and the soup and main course were simply not hot enough. Breakfast wasn't too bad but the scrambled egg and bacon could have been hotter. Our second experience of dinner was similar to our first night but by this time we had discovered a microwave in the dining room and proceded to reheat our main course in that. Needless to say several others followed our action. Following this the food was hotter and we were given more time to digest meals between courses. It would also have been greatly improved with a choice of dishes for dinner and a window of time should have been allocated for dinner - say 7-9. Finally, compared with other similar holidays we didn't find the staff particulary friendly, possibly because they appeared stressed and overworked.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel are quieter away from the noise of the trams on the front.

This is the 2nd time at this hotel as we went with Shearings a few years ago, nice big room, very clean, buffet breakfast good, nice bar, BUT the evening meal is still poor quality, we ate out, quite expensive when you have paid for half board. The staff are ok but I don't think they realy want the Brits there because as far as I could see there was no information in English at all in the hotel, even in the wellbeing centre that they advertise, no info in English.

Room Tip: we like a top floor, no noise from above, we were on the main street and didn't find it a prob...
