“17-19 Oct 2008 now called Albert II - Sam and the Grandmothers”
Reviewed October 21, 2008

I travelled to Ostend for a Beer Festival trip last Friday (17th Oct 2008) with my Grandmother and friend. We travelled from Swansea to stay at what is now know as Albert II hotel (previously George V) for two nights. The hotel bar and breakfast area was quite nice, looked as though it has been recently refurbished, however the rooms were not the best standard. The beds were very comfy, but the toilet/shower room was very small and the toilet was a bit dodgy. Nevertheless it was very central and served it’s purpose.

Went to Ron’s bar, which had live music (man with a keyboard) and after him some ‘disco’ style music. We met quite a lot of people in this bar, four Belgian Police Officers who were lovely. Kevin (one of them) mademe try the 8% local beer – blow your head off! (Kevin if you read this drop me an email ).

Beer Festival was 40 mins out. Cheery beer was LOVELY! Oom pa pa band played all night, and loadsa people dressed up for the occasion (would have liked to have seen a few nore Belgian people as most were English and Welsh).

To sum up, hotel ok is just using it for a base to kip as it was very central and quite clean

Went on an all inclusive package with leger to this hotel. There was no room at the Royal Astor, this was supposed to be a suitable alternative.
First impressions are grim - you walk into the 'foyer' which is lit red lights - you think its a brothel!
So up to reception - the lift or 4 flights of stairs.
The lift to the reception (yes, reception is on the 1st floor) is old, sounds like the tardis and you need to be an olympic weightlifter to open the lift door when you get there.
Reception is clean and presentable, a long passageway, with the bar on the left and the dining area a little further down on the left. Don't use the toilet at the end of the passageway, because it reeks, the door is always left ajar probably to get rid of the stench.
The receptionist was a young girl who was the manageress, the telephonist, the bartender and the hotel porter, poor girl rushed off her feet - and she was there what seemed like 12 hours a day.
After getting our keys, back into the lift - it broke down on our first day - so up 4 flights of stairs from reception, through badly lit corridors to our room.
They say first impressions last - our room - 2 single beds pushed together - one higher than the other - the TV on its shelf held on by what looked like a cheap trouser belt - the ceiling tiles out of position on the ceiling - every time the window was opened the wind blew in and moved the ceiling tiles!
The bathroom - large, with grey tiles - a lavatory that looked like it had never seen a bottle of bleach - the extractor fan over the shower - not working, all matted up with dirt and debris - the electric point coming away from the wall.
Tea and coffee supplied with a kettle that didn't work.
The beds were the most uncomfortable I have ever slept in,
enough said about that one.
One of our group got given a room with no bedding - no cleaners on site - so was given the another room - his TV didn't work and he had no hot water for 3 days!!
Cleaners took our towels on the second day and didn't bother to replace them until the third day, the room was never vacuumed and we had to make do with one roll of toilet paper for the first 4 days.
OK down for breakfast - Continental breakfast - nice croissants, cheese and meats.
Cold scrambled eggs - they were supposed to be hot!
Tiny luke warm sausages, - again supposed to be hot - they tasted like rubber and looked like something you would see inside a baby's nappy - yeuch.
Whoopee Evening meal time - This hotel doesn't have a kitchen, so all the meals are brought in from somewhere else.
No choices given, food bland, some of it undercooked, most of it was left by everyone. You would be given your meal leave nearly all of it, then go out into Ostend and buy something decent to eat.
Remember the toilet I mentioned to avoid? The desserts (cold rice pudding, luke warm chocolate mousse etc) are left on an uncovered serving tray within 10ft of the toilet door (that was continually left ajar) for the duration of the meal. Talk about Health and Safety!
Ok and finally off to the bar - ran out of orange fanta the first night - good start to the holiday!
Ran out of Gin on the 3rd night, didn't bother to replace it.
Ran out of beer on the 4th night.
One plus point - if your a smoker then you can smoke on the balcony - as long as you don't have vertigo.
The sign saying hotel under renovation has obviously been there for some time, never saw anybody doing any work apart from that poor girl on reception.

We stayed there for 3 nights in April 2008 with a large group from England booked through a travel agent
It is now called the Albert - part of the revamping - there was a sign on the door apologising for disruption during revamping
The entrance is off a very busy shopping centre with a lift taking you to the first floor to reception
The entrance has glass walls which are illuminated in red which is not a good choice we felt
The lift will take you to any of the floors in the hotel - therefore anyone off the street can go unchallenged to any part of the hotel - a big security issue !!!!
The receptionist initially was very pleasant and welcoming but it was soon apparent as the evening progressed she was the ONLY member of staff on duty and became quite agitated having to serve drinks etc - not her fault
Our first evening meal which was diabolical was not cooked on the premises but brought in from outside caterers. The next two evening meals were also brought in from caters but they were slightly better. There is only two choices of wine - red or white - but not expensive - no draft beer.
The dining room had the same feel as my old school dining hall
The bedrooms varied enormously - ours we thought was acceptable - needed decorating but the beds and bedding looked new and the room was clean - our room was quiet - but guests at the front of the hotel said it was VERY noisy
The public rooms were shabby and dusty and we couldn't decided which bits had been revamped as it was a mish mash of styles and not well done
There was a basic selection of food for breakfast - the rolls and bread were fresh - the sausages were unlike any I had seen before - it was not replenished so if you were one of the last down for breakfast you got what was left
We really can't recommend it mainly because of the safty and security issues.

We have just returned from a very disappointing holiday
we stayed at the GRAND GEORGE V Hotel in Ostende. It was far from grand.
The hotel was described by the Travel Agent as having been fully refurbished and a Quality Hotel this is not the case.

my husband and i have just returned from a 3 night break at george v hotel, before we travelled i read the reviews as we were ment to be staying in another hotel called the admiral but it was full, when we arrived at the hotel the entrance was ok and the young guy on the reception was very friendly, we stayed on the 2nd floor, our room was fairly big it had three beds, tv, tea and coffee etc and although the rooms are old it was clean and the carpet was new and the tiles in the bathroom were new, but the bath was very old fashioned, it had a ledge for you to sit on and then a shower head to hold, but the water pressure was great!! the maid cleaned the room every day and the bedding was new, the only thing i could find wrong in the room was the chair they had in there, it had a big damp stain on it, the hotel is very old there's know escapeing that but they are slowly doing it up it looks like, the lighting in our room was very poor but others said there's was fine, in our group no one had a complaint about the rooms. the big BUT was the food they would be better to just offer bed and continental breakfast instead of half board, the breakfast was very limited but ok, however the evening meals were poor we never went for our last one we gave up and went to the chicken place around the corner which had been recommended to us, when i say poor it wasn't badly cooked or anything it was just what they gave you, but the same lady doing breakfast also done the cleaning of the rooms and the evening meal so you couldn't help but feel sorry for her. the location of the hotel is excellent but we would probaly stay at another hotel next time if we went back, you have to remember though that it is only a 2 star hotel and you get whay you pay for and the fact that it was clean was a big plus, weve stayed all over and mainly in 4-5 star hotels, and this hotel didn't ruin our stay its not as bad as eveyone makes out, we had 2 trips out included in our package, first to sluis in holland this was an amazing little village a lovely place to stay, and secondly brugges this also was a lovely place, either place we would have prefered to stay, as ostend is just like blackpool, which is ok if you like that kind of thing, overall if your going to ostend and staying in this hotel don't worry its ok its not the hilton but neither are the prices to stay there, and by the way the beer and spirits are not cheap, like we got told ,its quite expensive over there, we found it more expensive than over here, and for the girls there h+m is much better than ours, and go down the road to georges restaurant/cafe they have the best waffles and ice cream , enjoy!!!!

We had the hotel selected as part of a fixed Easter coach package through a travel agent. Past relatives have done similar packages and had been very impressed with the standard of accommodation included, so with this in mind whilst booking I didn't look into particular hotel details.

The hotel gives a positive impression when looking at the street front, a marble entrance and staircase gives an initial good feeling. The reception staff were particularly friendly and spoke perfect English (not unusual for the Flemish who are very English friendly). The staff within the hotel were extremely friendly and helpful but this cannot counterbalance what we found in the bedroom we were allocated.

The room unfortunately was a complete contrast to our original impression from the hotel entrance. My wife and I had opted for a double bed, they'd squeezed in what I presume was a smaller version of this - leaving absolutely no floor space. The window which opened easily would not close due to a faulty catch opened out to a view of a brick wall. Fair enough though, not everyone can expect a sea view so this wasn't too much of a concern. The worst aspect of the room has to be the 'ensuite' which opened via a sliding ‘concertina’ style door to the room. Our biggest concern was the extremely strong smell of the human waste that came out of the shower plughole making the room smell like a poorly maintained gutter. This ontop of the overwhelming musky damp smell of the room made us opt to stay out of our room rather than spend time winding down from excursions. We also spoke to other members of our excursion party who had similar concerns regarding the rooms.

On future excursions with coach companies particularly if we decide to use the same company again (highly unlikely now) we will research the hotel they intend to use more closely and make a decision based on this rather than price.
