We visited Oostende as a family of four for a beach holiday. The hotel is ideally situated within 2 minutes walking distance of the large and beautiful Oostende beach (and that means walking with two toddlers and a load of beach gear). Also, it's right on the edge of the shopping district with a large variety of shops, bars and restaurants.
The staff was extremely helpful and well trained. They spoke at least four languages fluently; I didn't get a chance to hear any more.
The breakfast buffet was lovely and included better coffee than I've ever had at a hotel.
The pool was very nice, clean and elegant and the children's play area (with a ball bath, slide and various other playthings) was an excellent alternative when we had rain on our first day there.
Now for the negatives: the room was clean and large enough for us, with two double beds. Unfortunately, the second bed was a pullout couch that was uncomfortable to sleep on. The room was not air-conditioned (the hallways and the rest of the hotel were very nice and cool), so it got a bit too warm at night. When we opened a window to let in the cool night air, the very loud air conditioning unit made it hard to sleep.
I understand that the owners are in the process of refurbishing and that indeed a lot of the rooms are to a much higher standard. Still, I thought the family room "classic" could have been a bit better considering the cost of staying there.
It would have been nice if the hotel itself had had a restaurant; however, you could easily find one just by crossing the street.
Overall, the experience was very good, especially on a personal level with the excellent staff, and I can only suggest that you book one of the refurbished rooms if you decide to stay here.

Dear guest

Thank you for your feedback regarding our hotel. We are always eager to hear what our guests like about us and how we might improve.

We are pleased to read that your overall experience of hotel Bero was very good: the ideal situation, the excellent staff, the clean and large room, the lovely breakfast buffet, the nice pool and children's play area are indeed very important aspects for our guests to enjoy their stay with us. Besides our refurbished rooms (Ecology/Executive) with airco, we also have our Classic family suites with seperate bedroom and two twin beds. For longer stays is this more comfortable than the pullout couch in the Classic family room.

Thank you again for staying with us. We are looking forward to welcoming you back the next time you are visiting Ostend. Maybe in a less busy period where we can offer you more favorable rates.

Best regards

Having stayed there for two nights I wonder whether we stayed in the same hotel described in its many gushing reviews, earning it a number 1 Trip Advisor status.

The room was old, tatty, and in serious need of refurbishment. The carpet was stained; also the walls and bathroom showed bad signs of wear and tear. For €150 a night we expected, and have usually experienced, much, much better.

The room layout is odd – bath and wash-hand basin in one room, toilet and shower in another, both will ill-fitting brown concertina doors. The toilet was not much than a metre from my bed – not a pretty sight. The shower doors leaked, making the toilet floor wet after only a short shower. The room door key was very difficult to operate – old and mechanical, it needed anything from 2 to 20 turns to lock or unlock the door. The room was very hot, so there was a choice of trying to sleep in an oven, or, with the windows open, being kept awake with road noise and seagulls. Having returned and re-read the reviews there does appear to be a renovated part of the hotel – we should have complained and asked for a new room, although in early August that may not have been successful.

The breakfast was adequate, typical of mainland European hotels – I certainly would not rave about it. You should try to get there before 0930 when the hordes descend, when you end up having to wait for a table, and also queue to get to the food.

We didn't visit the pool, so can’t comment on that, although we did go up to the sun terrace on the 5th floor – scruffy decking, a couple of scruffy plastic chairs and a view of the roof tops – why bother?

On the positive side, the location is excellent, minutes away from the beach, the restaurants and the shops.

Parking is a bit of an issue in Ostend. The hotel has its own parking which I'm told you have to book. One night we parked in the public car park in Mijn Plein only 5 minutes walk away, but at €22 per day, this is an extortionate price for a small town (you might expect it in Brussels or Paris, but not here.) Then the tourist office told us about free parking by Maria Hendrika Park, some 15 minutes walk from the hotel (although they do have bike hire at the park). It was full during the day, but when we returned late afternoon there were several spaces and so parked there.

Room Tip: Don't accept an old room!

Dear Mr Bernard

Thank you for your feedback regarding our hotel. We are always eager to hear what our guests like about us and how we might improve. We are pleased to read that you enjoyed our excellent location: just a few steps away from the beach, the Casino-Kursaal, the musea, the traffic free shopping streets and many nice restaurants and pubs. Even the railway station is just a 10 minutes' walk from the hotel.

On the other hand we are very sorry that your Classic room didn't meet your expectations. We will certainly look into the shower doors and the door lock. We are regularly refurbishing the hotel and as soon as the latest investment of more than 5.000.000 € is "digested" we plan to tackle the Classic rooms as well. Although these spacious rooms with sitting corner are maybe a bit old-fashioned, they offer our guests modern facilities: 36-inch flatscreen with satellite television (96 channels), free highspeed wifi, mini-fridge, safe, coffee and tea making facilities. And of course free access to our brand new leisure center "Ninfea". They don't have airco yet but one can always book an Ecology or Executive room with airco. With 60% of our rooms + all meeting rooms and public areas offering airco, hotel Bero is one of the leading hotels in Ostend for that matter.

Early August is the peak period of the high season at the Belgian coast. At that time there are more people living on this 67 km long stretch than in many major cities and Ostend is the bustling centre of it. That is why Ostend often has the priviledge of welcoming big productions like Cirque du Soleil and famous musicals like Mamma Mia and Cats. Because of the high demand in that period, prices tend indeed to be at the same level as those of the bigger cities. But is this economic law between supply and demand not the same all over the world?

Thank you again for staying with us. We do hope to welcome you back the next time you are visiting Ostend. Maybe in a less busy period where we can gladly offer you more favorable prices.

Best regards

The location of the hotel is great - just a short stroll to the casino, the beach and the high street.
The hotel staff couldn't do enough to make our stay enjoyable. Mr Bero and his family are perfect hoteliers.

We stayed here as a result of the reviews on TA and were not disappointed at all.

Check in was both friendly and efficient and the room (an executive room) was great. A large room with two twin beds pushed together to create a double (usual for Europe we have found), it was perfect.

The bathroom is also large and quite stylish with a bath and shower (excellent shower), and a hair dryer included within it.

Breakfast was fantastic- a huge spread to suit all tastes which is operated on a self service basis therefore avoiding any delay in service to yourself.

Check out is 11 am but we wanted a swim after breakfast so they gave us an extra hour which was a nice touch.

I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel- it has a lovely atmosphere and it was a pleasure to stay there.

The room was very clean with all facilities available.
