“Fantastic hotel”
Reviewed January 16, 2012

Wow, great hotel in a great city. Great location, walking distance to all the attractions in Bruge including the tower featured in one of my favorite movies, In Bruges. Hotel seems like it was once a castle before being turned into luxury hotel. Room was very spacious and luxurious. Staff was incredibly professional and polite. Great hotel in a fascinating city. Definitely recommend booking.

Good sized rooms for a great price in a central location. Nice bathrooms. Good bar. Didnt take up the breakfast as we wanted to get out and about and explore and enjoy having breakfast out at different places each day we were in the City. Lovely - book it!

Hotel is beautiful, location is ideal, staff are extremely accommodating, rooms are luxurious, spa and massage excellent. We had a superb romantic weekend in this hotel and will certainly go back, I would thoroughly recommend and couldn't imagine that there will be a better hotel than this one in Bruges.

Arrived on an horrendous Friday evening rain lashing down gale force winds no taxis! Had a dream of a journey to Bruges on Euro business class really is very good. fiinally got a taxi after an hour wait, absolutely soaked including suitcases not good start to the weekend. However, on first setting eyes on the Kempinski all the niggles disappeared, it really is a beautiful building and was lit up for Christmas. Check in was efficient and friendly with a lot of sympathy regarding our bedraggled state! We had been upgraded to a deluxe suite on the floor above reception and it was gorgeous about the size of a small apartment. We dined at the hotel that night not wanting to brave the elements again and after a glass of mulled wine felt happy cocooned at the Dukes Palace. We did not have an inclusive breakfast which suited us fine. After waking up and walking round the Christmas market (okay but not spectacular) we had an early lunch of moules and frites in a bistro in the main square. The steaming mussels were great as were the frites and mayonnaise. We went to restaurant on the second night think it was called Kardashall a five minute walk from the Kempinski and beautiful food in a friendly environment would recommend not inexpensive but worth the cost as michelin standard - or not far off anyway. We had a wine paring and it was fabulous. If I returned to Bruges (which I do not think I will) I would like to stay in the Kempinski - not cheap but worth the extra for a special trip.

Room Tip: Stay in a suite if you can

We stayed at the Duke’s Palace for 2 nights just after Christmas and very much enjoyed our stay.

The hotel is in an amazing building that, in short, looks like a castle. It is very well located to the sights in Bruges but the location itself is very quiet.

We splurged and tried the Isabella of Portugal Suite and it was definitely an experience. First of all, the room is more or less off by itself – the first time they showed us the route to get to it I wasn’t sure I would find my way back (but I did). Because it was off by itself, the room was very quiet which I loved. The room itself was amazing with the high vaulted ceilings and wood beams. One thing to bear in mind if you are considering this room is that it is very very cool looking, but really is not necessarily all that user friendly. For example the room is very large, but there aren’t any super comfortable places to sit (no couch just several chairs and the bed). Again, we really enjoyed it, but had we been there for more than a couple of nights, I think a more comfortable room would have been preferred. The other issue we had with the room was that with the very high vaulted ceilings it was impossible to get the sleeping area warm (exactly the opposite of the problem we had in another hotel on our trip). I am absolutely glad we tried the room, but just bear in mind that they are some drawbacks to the cool historical room.

Aside from the design quirks, the room was very nice, with a huge bed, various chairs, a desk, a small sort of dining table, and coffee/tea making facilities which we always appreciate. The bathroom was perfectly nice with dual sinks and separate shower and tub.
We explored the hotel quite a bit and found it fascinating. Because it used to be a palace, there are all sort of different staircases, areas and hallways. The overall map of the hotel must be a maze. On the way to our room you passed the spiral staircase that is in the round tower; there is also a beautiful chapel that is used for events. If you stay here, definitely just wander around and you will see what I mean.

We enjoyed the breakfast in the hotel restaurant which was very nice. We also took advantage of the bar area for drinks on several occasions as well as tea one afternoon. The view over the internal gardens is very nice.

The staff was very helpful with reservations and were happy to show us the chapel when we asked (and to answer all my questions about the very unique property). The concierge was helpful before we arrived in arranging various car transfers.

We definitely recommend the Duke’s Palace and will stay again if we return to Bruges.

Room Tip: The Isabella of Portugal Suite was quite an experience!

Stayed at the Kempinski in Bruges for one night in late December. Definitely exceeded expectations as far as room size and quality when compared to most European accomodations. The room was large and very well kept, well decorated and comfortable. It was a true, full sized king bed which was a pleasant surprise. The hotel itself is beautiful. Reception was warm, promptly took our car and bags - the only thing I would note is that we arrived early, around 2 pm and the room was not ready however this seemed more like a 'practice' to wait until 3 pm check-in time versus seeing if a room was available us even though we requested early check in. No big deal as a short walk around beautiful Bruges and we were back at the hotel and ready to go to our room. We stayed in what we were told was the "original" part of the hotel. Spent a good amount of time in the bar and even ended up eating there after our restaurant of choice in Bruge didn't work out - everything was great! We didn't use any of the hotels services as we were only there for one nite but as far as a hotel providing nice accomadations with all the creature comforts you may know and love, this place fits the bill. I will definitely stay here again if I ever make it back to Bruge.
