“Fantastic combination of a night stay in Herring's residence and dinner at the 'Den Gouden Harynck' in Bruges”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2014

A replenishing night of rest away from the hustle & bustle of Bruges in the "Herring's Residence" suits even the most cultivated visitor's agenda. This B&B in the medieval heart of Bruges combines modern accomodation, charming decoration & a hearty personal welcome by the owner. Cherry on the cake of any stay in Bruges is an evening's dinner in chef Philippe Serruys "Gouden Harynck", just a stone's throw away. (1-star Michelin, 17/20 Gault & Millau). A top recommendation for true lovers of gastronomy, culture & the good life.

“Food unfussy but highly creative”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2014

I tend to be put off starred restaurants because of the formally but we had liked this restaurant a few years ago so went back. It has retained it's lovely mixture of elegance in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

But one goes for the food. Visualise marinated langoustines and herbs very finally chopped in a circle in the middle of a plate surrounded by caviar in some sort of medium. Looked beautiful, tasted better. We followed that with loin of hare beautifully presented and ended with a pleasant, if simple dessert.

My only criticism, not just of this but all Bruges restaurants, was the near complete absence of vegetables.

“Fabulous”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 19, 2013

This was the highlight of a weekend away for my wife's 50th birthday. The restaurant is intimate, but with enough space for diners and a relaxed décor. Service was attentive and discreet throughout. We went on a Saturday night, when only a set menu was offered, to show off chef Phillipe's skills. Nevertheless they were very happy to replace my wife's scallop starter with a crab alternative because of her shellfish allergy-and it was delicious with a sweetcorn sorbet. I had the delicately marinated scallops and they were delicious. The second course of brill was served with a seed crust, braised white cabbage and a stunning smoked celeriac puree. It was exceptional. Hare loin with berries and a rich sauce was hearty yet refined and an exotic fruit compote finished. The dessert was perhaps the least sophisticated course, but a light end to a fabulous meal. There was an extra bonus of being able to watch the kitchen work and a chat with Phillipe at the end of the evening. All in all, this would take some beating.

“A great combination of flavours”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 22, 2013

This is a formal dining experience, but we found the staff very friendly and attentive, as you would expect. We had a set menu, but without any fuss they swapped one of the shellfish starters for pan fried goose liver, because I don't eat shellfish. We both found the brill dishes excellent. We were suprised by the wonderful combination of flavours of the brill, celeriac puree and cabbage. Delightful! The main course of venison (cooked pink to perfection) was another great combination of tastes. All of the accompanients went extremely well together and were very balanced. They also have a very good selection of cheeses. The only aspect of the meal that could cause issues for people was the amount of time between courses, which was longer than we had expected. From our point of view time did not matter and the taste of the dishes certainly made up for it.

“Wonderful Michelin Star Experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 16, 2013

We stayed in this restaurant's fabulous self-catering B&B townhouse, in the old part of town, just steps away from this restaurant. The concept of this B&B, called "The Herring's Residence", is novel and wonderful for those who enjoy complete privacy and do not mind preparing their own breakfast. The retro refrigerator is stocked with fresh bacon, prosciutto, various cheeses, eggs, jams, butter, juices, milk, various yogurts, bottled water and a bottle of champagne. There are also cereals, fresh seasonal fruit. It is restocked as needed. Each morning a basket of fresh baguette, croissants, pastries and fresh fruit salad is delivered to the patio weather permitting or inside the front door.
This three storey fully renovated town house has a large kitchen which opens into a lovely living room. The kitchen has its own clothes washer/dryer. The second floor has a large bedroom with a king size bed covered in wonderful luxurious linens. There is a bathroom and WC supplied with all the necessary toiletries and bathrobes. On the third floor there is another quiet sitting area.
It is a great place to bring in a dinner of cooked langoustines, fresh herring or your food of choice with wine or beer and spend the evening just relaxing. During the warmer weather you can have a meal outside on the patio.
Very important in Bruges, a parking space is provided right outside the door.
Take time to have a glorious, delicious meal at Den Gouden Harynck. The food was simply and wonderfully prepared, elegantly served by a very knowledgeable and friendly staff. It was early game season so we were able to enjoy venison and wild hare.
This restaurant is well worth its one star Michelin and 17 out of 20 rating from GaultMillau. It is elegant without being stuffy. People come in jackets and others in jeans.
