We spent three nights in May 2009 at this amazing B&B. We had been reluctant to stay in a B&B because we like our privacy and thought we might feel claustrophobic. But we were drawn in by the beautiful web site and the kindness of the owner, Caroline. We were visiting Bruges for the first time so had some questions which she answered patiently and thoroughly. She is knowledgeable, kind, and generous with her time. We cannot say enough about her and Henk (and their dogs Fidele and Molly).
We stayed in Clin d'Oeil, a very spacious and light-filled room on the second floor, overlooking the inviting garden and the canal. It was quiet, comfortable, and elegantly appointed. Much thought had gone into the restoration of the room, and the choice of furnishings and other decorations. Breakfast was plentiful and delicious with fresh pastries, breads, fruit, meats, cheeses, coffee and tea. The weather cooperated enough for us to enjoy breakfast in the garden. What a treat! I’m sure we were the envy of all those who saw us from the canal boats floating by. You really feel the regard Caroline has for the house which has been in her family for generations. If you take a canal boat ride, you may be lucky to see the “In Bruges” movie star Fidele in their open library window with his front paws hanging out, a truly sweet sight.
Bruges is a magical place which we hope to return to again soon. When we do, we will be sure to stay at Cote Canal.
