“This must be the best place to stay in Bruges!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2013

We were very lucky to have been sent on a wonderful stay in Bruges, kindly booked as a surprise from all our family as a wedding/ 50th birthday gift. We walked from the station in awe of the beautiful surroundings and knew we had found the guest house as the now infamous dog (immortalised in the film 'In Bruges') was resting hanging half out of the window! We were greeted by the wonderful Caroline, who over a cup of tea sitting in the beautiful garden, gave us a map and lots of useful advice. The room was a dream, as was the kitchen and sitting room. All cosy, beautifully furnished, inviting and very clean. Certainly a feast for the eyes. Views over the garden and canal made it an idyllic setting. It is so near to the main attractions but you get the peace and the tranquility here. Breakfast was a vast array of yummy delights served with tasty coffee and delicious freshly squeezed Orange. Tea and coffee at your leisure can be made throughout the day. All wonderful for a relaxing break. It is so easy to walk anywhere from this location. We feel so lucky that we stayed here and thank Caroline so much for such a lovely experience. We hope to visit again.

Room Tip: All the rooms look great but the one with the bath is ultimate luxury!

My husband and I spent our honeymoon here and we could not have wished for a better, more beautiful or romantic place! Cote Canal is perfection.

The attic room was an absolute dream: quiet, peaceful and secluded right at the top of the house with no neighbours. It was a perfect hideaway from the hustle and bustle of Bruges. However, you don't feel cut off because you can sit at the window and watch the tour boats marvelling at Caroline 's beautiful dog who can always be seen watching the world go by.

Cosy furnishings, comfortable bed, great shower (no bath), hairdryer, bathrobes, soft towels, lots of lovely little touches designed to make your stay extra special. The whole house is decorated to a very high standard.

Breakfast is fantastic: plentiful and delicious ( Caroline makes amazing scrambled eggs). If you're lucky like we were you can eat in the beautiful garden.

Saving the best bit until last: Caroline. Friendly, discreet, informative, helpful. A better hostess could not be found the world over. Thank you so much for making our homeymoon magical.

Room Tip: Attic room is exceptional value for money!

Can you believe that this beautiful place got 508 excellent reviews out of a total of 516? I've never seen that before in my life, but to be honest, I have no idea why the remaining eight reviews would not give full marks. There is just nothing you could fault. The location is excellent for exploring old Brugge, with a 5 minute walk (if you're slow) to the Burg and Markt.

Caroline and her husband are excellent hosts, giving you all the privacy you want but are always ready to assist where and when needed. The rooms are spacious, exquisitely decorated and all stretch across the entire depth of the house. You can always help yourself to free coffee and tee or to some stronger libations on the honour system.

A scrumptious breakfast is either served in the breakfast room or preferably out in the garden as long as the weather cooperates - and on most mornings it will. Don' be surprised to see groups of people across the canal looking at the place; they're not looking at you, rather they have come to get a glimpse and a photo of Fidel, the dog of the house, probably the most photographed dog in the world, resting in his favourite spot in the window.

Wonderful experience on our stay, highly recommend Cote Canal and Caroline if you plan to visit Brugge! I am a light sleeper and often in hotels am awakened by late guests walking by the door. Not in this house, was surprised at our lovely garden breakfast to find there were actually several other couples - never heard a sound! We were in the suite Clin D'Oeil, great space with a beautiful view of the garden and the canal. Modern bath facilities with luxury touches (where did she get those so very soft robes?) combined with the old world surroundings were a perfect balance!

My husband, daughter, and I visited Bruges for a couple of days. Caroline is quite the hostess. She gave us advice on what to see and do in the area, which was very helpful. Cote Canal B&B is in a very beautiful location along the canal. We were able to walk around and see Bruges very easy. Caroline takes great pride in what she does. Our room was clean and neat. Each morning we had a traditional Belgium breakfast. It was hard to say goodbye to such a lovely place and Caroline, our new found friend, in Bruges. Prior to our taxi ride back to the train station, we met her "famous dog" Fidele. When we left, both Caroline and Fidele watched our taxi drive past the B&B. She waved while Fidele hung his head out the window. We will never forget our time in Bruges.

I stayed here in early September for 4 glorious nights.
1. In terms of location, it couldn't be better. This wonderful guesthouse is right on one of the most beautiful stretches of canal in Bruges and is itself the subject of comment and admiration from the boats that go past. I see from the pictures that Huis Koning is also on a canal, but its view of the back of residential houses is nowhere near as beautiful as here. This is a privileged spot and, of course, within easy walking distance of the Burg, Central Market and the Groeningemuseum.
2. Despite this, the atmosphere at the Cote Canal is quiet, almost contemplative, and it offers the perfect sanctuary from the summer hordes of tourists. The reason is that this is still very much an intimate home, (it is not a hotel), and a sense of family still pervades. The owner Caroline has skilfully 'opened up' what may once have been a darker space, making it into a bright and airy environment, decorated throughout with warmth and elegance. An old-world charm goes hand in glove with modern comfort. Even the beams in the attic have an antique patina that adds to the overall experience. Compared to the characterless 'modern chic' of so many other places, this is authentic and beautiful.
3. This elegance reflects Caroline herself, and her hospitality has a wonderful personal touch. It's obvious that she cares that we have a good stay in Bruges, and her knowledge and insider's tips are very useful. For example, she advised us to have lunch at the café attached to the beer museum which turned out to be a fantastic choice. Not only were the traditional dishes of Flemish stew and shrimp croquettes really delicious, they were also much cheaper there than at most other places. Incidentally, the breakfast at Cote Canal is also wonderful.
4. Finally, I felt that the attic room for 4 nights was extremely good value. I wouldn't hesitate to go back, hopefully many times. In fact, walking through the streets I would come across larger, more modern hotels that obviously cost a fortune, but I actually felt sorry for the people who stayed there. It seemed to me that they missed a trick.

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms here! Caroline said that from November there attic rooms will not be open.

Wonderful old house overlooking canal. Quiet location, 5 mins walk from centre of Bruges. Large, very clean and comfortable rooms with spacious en-suite bathrooms. Lounge with art deco furniture. Courtyard garden with tables for breakfast - if weather clement. Kitchen-dining room is also available. Caroline is an excellent and welcoming hostess; she is fluent in several languages. She provides a superb breakfast and reliable advice about places to eat in the evening. She is flexible about timing of breakfast to fit with tours of Flanders battlefields. Tea and coffee making facilities plus an honesty bar are thoughtful extras. Would be first choice of place to stay in Bruges.
