My boyfriend and I had a lovely stay at the Martin's Relais in Bruges. We took a short taxi from the train station to the hotel (due to the luggage) and were shown our room immediately. The staff was friendly throughout our stay - very helpful with dinner recommendations and reservations.

The hotel is a short (and pretty) walk away from the main visitor attractions. It's a quieter area and we appreciated the short walk along the canals after dinner.

There's a nice bar area in the hotel - quiet and calm. Enjoyed a nice night cap before tucking into bed.

Would definitely recommend this place for couples as it's quite romantic and charming.

Room Tip: Garden view room was very quiet and offered lots of sunlight in the mornings.

We stayed at Martin's Relais for 2 nights in March 2013. Check in was very straightforward despite us arriving a little early, and the roaring fireplace certainly made two cold travellers feel very welcome at any time of day.

We had a garden view room and were impressed with the size and cleanliness of the room and bathroom. Large double bed, though as is often the case with hotels, the bed was two single beds pushed together rather than a single mattress. Ample room for unpacking and free safe in the room.

The only downsides were that we would have liked more toiletries in the bathroom and the breakfast rate at the hotel was 22 euro each for a "champagne breakfast". This was a little steep for us and it would have been nice if there was a cheaper option, perhaps without the alcohol. Having said that, nowhere is far to walk in Bruges and so it was not difficult to find a cafe serving breakfast.

Bruges is a lovely city to explore and I would like to pass on something which we read in another review which is that the cobbled streets make it difficult for drag along cases, so rucksacks and travelling light made life a lot easier for us.

If we were to return to Bruges I would definitely consider staying at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Garden view room was a great size and was nice and quiet

Dear KB24,

Please let me thank you for sharing your experience on our hotel.

We hope you did not find the bed uncomfortable. We also have rooms with one double mattress, which we always allocate when specifically requested. I am not sure if you did this, but in case you would have, I would like to apologize for this.

Perhaps our staff did not inform you well enough about the breakfast, but if this is pre-booked (through the internet or even the evening before at reception), we offer it at the rate of 17 € per person instead of the normal 22 €.

We are also very glad to read that you enjoyed your room and that you felt welcome when you arrived, even though we are pleased we can finally turn off the fire, as spring has finally arrived in Bruges :-)

Hopefully we may have the oppurtunity to welcome you another time at Martin's Relais

Warm regards

Sofie Goossens

After booking Hotel Martins through Eurostar we headed straight for the one on the booking confirmation, Oude Burg 5.
On arrival we were advised that we were not booked into this hotel but another one in the group called Hotel Martins Relais, a four star instead of three and only five minute walk away. Both were not far from the town centre.
I thought that we were going to have problems but headed for the other hotel and was warmly greeted by the receptionist. Great stuff.
Got shown to our room and I must say, it was an impressive period room over the old stable block with out own entrance.
The bed was comfortable and the lighting subdued, adding to the ambiance. All mod cons provided but would have appreciated a few more tea bags and coffee.
We stayed for three nights and enjoyed every minute of it. Good value and pleasant staff.

book here for a weekend with friends. the location is perfect overlooking one the the canals. the rooms were large and well furnished BUT even though it was winter and we turned all the radiators off the room was too hot to sleep comfortably.
Breakfast - We had a package, but had i had to pay the full 26 Euro per person for breakfast there may have been a slight international incident :) the hot food was terrible; solid crispy scramble egg that was in the heater for well over 1 hour then "fresh" albeit the same consistency placed directly on top of the old. I will not go on about the rest it was all the same quality - very poor. the continental side of things was good when there was food available.
the hotel had a bar area, but we never saw anyone in there nor anyone wanting to serve, so we went out.
all in all be careful what you expect. I have stayed in far better hotels in Brugge for far less money.

Dear Rayn,

Thank you for the time you took to share your comments on our hotel on Tripadvisor.

We are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy our breakfast, but I would like to ensure you that all of the hot items on the buffet are made freshly, at the moment our breakfast room opens. The bacon and sausages are even grilled instead of baked (so without any additional fat) which makes the bacon a little crispy sometimes.

Also, the rate of the breakfast has never been 26 €, but 17 € if pre-booked (through the online reservation system or through your travel agency) or 22 € if joined without booking it in advance.

As we are a small hotel with only 44 rooms, most of the time (except when really busy) the reception staff also looks after the bar, so it is true that there is nobody "constantly" waiting there. But even if they have missed seeing you going in, they would have helped you with a smile if you would have asked them to.

The bar is arranged like a cozy living room or loung, rather than a real bar, so we think a bartender hanging around there constantly would not suit this concept.

Nevertheless we hope we may welcome you again on another occasion.

Best regards

Sofie Goossens

This is a lovely hotel in an excellent location, we had the basement room, so there wasn't much light and we could hear everything above, but it was a lovely room, nice and clean and an excellent shower!! It's a 5 minute walk from the main square, with some really nice restaurants nearby and a excellent chocolate shop 2 minutes away and it was a lot cheaper than the other shops we went in!!

Couldn't fault this hotel. Our room was a really good size,as was the bathroom. Tastefully decorated. 5 minutes from the Markt. Open fire. Lovely bar area. Friendly staff. Minibar items not overpriced. Overall we were really happy with our choice of hotel. We paid £95 via Booking.com for a room overlooking the garden on the first floor.
We had breakfast at 'Pain Quotidien' as it was cheaper (just off the Markt) where they sell great croissants and pastries. I would recommend you take advantage of the parking provided by the hotel if you can, although spaces are limited, as this can be an issue in Bruges.

Wonderful hotel, had canal view which was a delight. Bed super cosy and comfy -best nights sleep in ages! Bathroom was spacious and well decorated. Maid service was up to a very high standard. Recepion staff were exceptional. Had a very scary experience at a local restaurant (called OLD BRUGE, please avoid at all costs as were assualted by staff there). When we got back to the hotel we spoke to Frederiec at reception who we told what had happened to us and he swiftly called the police, explained the seriousness of the situation and asked the police to visit us. He assured us that bad things like we experienced do not happen in Bruge and I urge you to ask the hotel for restaurant recommendations to avoid what happened to us. We were so impressed with Frederiec's professionalism during this matter we wanted to highlight it on this page. Thanks to Martins Relais and staff for restoring our faith again and for helping us on a very difficult evening. You will not regret booking up here.

Room Tip: Canal views are fab!!
