Planted in full view as you enter reception is the Tripadvisor certificate of excellecce so obviously they take Tripadvisor reviews seriously and its nice to know that the Manager or owners may actually read this. so let's go: Firstly, they have the whole Tripadvisor thing worked out; You try to book a canal room, they will say that they are fully booked and instead you are given a garden room...Ok, that's fine. When you turn up to check in you are told that they have 'upgraded' you to a canal room!!!...Brilliant, you think, and off you go to Tripadvisor to give them 5 stars and a stupendous review. Very clever, well played Hotel Martin's Relais, well played but this is one punter who writes a review based on the overall experience and not one based on a clever trick.

Your beds are a great size but slightly uncomfortable and way too firm but the pillows are great. You don't have enough clothes hangers in the wardrobe so we had to live out of a suitcase although, I have to thank you for the loan of the iron and ironing board - the lack of clothes hangers meant we needed it.

Don't expect any English channels on the tv and if you do get a canal room dont bother opening the windows because as beautiful as it may seem, its noisy because a road runs directly outside your windows.

Having a bar is a great idea but the shock of being hit with a bill of 26 euros for 4 cokes and a can of orange juice nearly killed me. How the hell you can warrant that kind of expense is beyond me!!...I probably wont ever return to Brugge again but if i had to i would certainly give this hotel a wide berth. Way too greedy. You ruined it. Poor review.

Now thats a 3-star for the hotel. Now onto Brugge itself:

You will be ripped off in the main market square - 2 and a half pints of Stella and 3 gin and tonic and expect a bill of around 56 euros. This square is one great big rip off and i would suggest to anyone to stay well away from it. Do not eat or drink there and make your way slightly outside this area for cheaper and better options and, if you want decent food, good atmosphere and a decent drink at better prices make your way to the Boru Irish bar, which is a 2 minute walk down the side street off the square.

Room Tip: Canal rooms are dearer and if you want peace and quiet go for a garden room. Leave the mini bar alone and expect extortionate prices at the bar.

Dear Deeky,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences with our future guests. Guest feedback is extremely important in our line of business.

As you mentioned at the time you made your reservation all rooms with canal view were full. Due to some cancellations the room you initially requested for became available again. As we are very customer minded we allocated you in this room. So it’s a pity that you experience this gesture as a clever trick.

For the beds it’s all a matter of personal taste, for some people the mattresses are excellent for others they are way too firm. The hotel has a 24h reception service, so asking for some extra clothes hangers would have avoid you living out of your suitcase.

The hotel is located in the city center, so you will always experience some noise, like you have in each city hotel.

The hotel indeed has a lovely bar overlooking the canal. All our soft drinks (coke, lemonade, orange juice, water etc.) are at a cost of 3 € each. Please do contact me personally so I can see what went wrong with your bill.

I know we cannot undo your experiences about the hotel and about Bruges, however we do hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back one day in our city

Warm regards

Sofie

My husband and I stayed here last weekend. We had a service person come in to our room twice without knocking while we were sleeping on the day that we arrived. It was quite rude and we did not feel safe. The bed was extremely uncomfortable and the lighting was poor. The reception staff (with the exception of the evening gentleman) was sour and not friendly. Would definitely not go back.

Have stayed at this hotel twice. Excellent location, we drove and no problem parking in Hotels shared underground car park. Nice rooms and a great breakfast. location is excellent and staff very pleasant. if you are attached to your mobile/Ipad then wifi is expensive as most of expect it complimentary these days as a guest. Otherwise can't fault the place.

Room Tip: We stayed in a canal room both times. The cobled streets are noisy particulary early in the morning but thats expected in a medieval town so don't let any reviews put you off. We are slept well (could be the stong beer !)

Excellent little hotel in Bruges (Brugge), with very helpful staff and excellent rooms.
The location was excellent for the purpose of our trip which was simlpe tourism. Did think the the rate was at the upper end of good value and would not be prepared to pay more for the accomodation.
We did not have breakfast in the hotel but choose instead to have our usual light morning meal in the local coffee shop arroud the corner at one third of the hotel cost.

Used the hotel parking lot which was secure although not too convienent to the hotel, for baggage transfer on departure.

Overall a very enjoyable expreience but doubt if we will use this hotel again.

Stayed in the family room with my husband and 16 year old daughter and it was huge and had nice character. We had a super king size bed which was very comfortable and a roll away for our daughter. There were two armchairs with a handy table between plus another desk and chair and a small fridge. The tiled bathroom had a double shower with a separate bath and was also spacious. The toilet seat moved when one sat on it so needs to be repaired but I was so happy with all the space and the comfortable bed after the tiny cramped apartment we stayed at in Paris that I wasn't bothered. I had trouble setting the aircon so it was a bit cold but it was good to be able to close the windows and it was nice and quiet. Location was close to the market square and other attractions. Cleanliness was very good - not spotless but I have yet to stay anywhere that is
