“Biggest Beer We've ever had”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

It was a quick stop for a beer and some dessert. We ordered waffles and large beer. We thought that large just meant 'pint', we were shocked when it arrived, it was at least 2 pints in one glass :)
I had the 'of the house' waffle which was with pear and my husband had the 'mikado', both waffles very nice. Good and friendly service. As we did not have a meal in there I can only say that looking at other tables all food looked delicious. Enjoy!

“Tourists Beware! Bait and Switch "Specials" and Payment Rules”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

The food...was OK! Not terrible. Nothing special. However, the service and policies left much to be desired.

Located just one block off the Markt, you have already likely passed many appealing restaurants, most of which have outside seating and "sidewalk board" lead-ons and "specials". This one is on a little low-key square shared by 8 or so restaurants and it seems like a peaceful stop.

Once you are at the table and have made it clear that you are wanting one of the obvious choices from the sidewalk menu board, the wait staff lead's the victims down the path to financial ruin by offering a variety of sides that effectively shift you to the far higher priced main menu. No effort is made to clarify that nothing being offered comes with the "specials".

For us, we caught the rip-off after accepting one frightfully overpriced beer "upgrade" and mitigated our damage. (Do not go for the "bigger" beer. You will receive a glass that is 5 times bigger than the pint ordered, and 6 times more expensive.) After confirming how expensive this ridiculously sized beer was going to cost, we made the waiter review our order and demanded confirmation as to whether or not those choices came with the specials. He faked confusion that we were order from the sidewalk specials (something we made obvious upon sitting down), so he then rushed off to "correct" the order with the kitchen.

At payment time, while surrounded by large credit card logo stickers on various windows, we were informed that credit cards were not accepted by those ordering the specials (talk about violation of their credit card service agreement). After he realized that we were ready argue and not passively roll-over, he suddenly apologized and confirmed that he could CC's after all. However, since we lost of trust on this joint and did not to provide an opportunity for credit card fraud (inflated tip, anyone?), we paid cash, took a quick picture, and left.

Tourist towns are notorious for such operations. This one is a bit worse that the average. I've spared what we observed going on with other tables, but it was always the same. The difference, is most folks fail to call out wait staff who do this and they fail to post their stories on the web, as I am doing.

Find another restaurant. This town has a number of lovely options.

“Choose carefully”
Reviewed May 3, 2013 via mobile

I wished I had read the reviews here before I went in. The service was poor - there was one surly waiter for the three tables (av of 3-4 persons per table) for lunch at the restaurant...we were the 2nd table to arrive, yet it took him ages to take our order, and he managed to deliver food to the wrong tables. Our food took forever to come, and when it did, it was below average. We sat in the conservatory, and it really smelled bad. The toilets were really dirty too. Who knows- maybe they were having an "off day"? Regardless, I will not be going back.

“a friendly gem”
Reviewed March 25, 2013

On a recent trip to Bruges we happened across La Source and enjoyed two evening meals there. The staff were welcoming and friendly, and very helpful. The food, service, beer and wine were excellent and very reasonably priced. We will definitely return next time we visit Bruges

Thanks

“Food OK - service poor. One to avoid!”
Reviewed March 22, 2013

Food was ok, but nothing special - I had mussels and chips, my wife had an omelette.

The place was almost empty, (as were neighbouring restaurants), but the service was slow and the waiter seemed dour, fairly clueless and unenthusiastic. Despite there being only four tables occupied, when he brought our food, he tried three other tables first, and then by a process of elimination, must have concluded that the two plates of food were ours. Then blow me if he didn’t plonk the plates down on an empty table and start clearing another table, then almost as an afterthought, brought the food to us. Maybe he was just having an 'off day'?

The bill came to 36 Euro (food in Bruges is ludicrously overpriced), and ordinarily I wouldn’t have given a tip, but the waiter had the cheek to cross out the printed 36 Euro on the bill and wrote 40 Euro in ballpoint pen, awarding himself a 4 Euro tip. (No mention of a service charge on the menu). Not worth causing a scene over, but if he considers what he provided amounted to service above and beyond the call of duty, he has delusions of adequacy!

Needless to say, we won’t be going back.
