“A favourite place to relax in Bruges”
Reviewed January 20, 2014

Being winter, we made two visits to Carpe Diem on our recent trip. Great just for a coffee and cake and also a light lunch. They have a very extensive menu of salads, toasties, omelettes, sandwiches, cakes and all manner of other interesting things.

Staff are always welcoming - they can spot the British guest a mile off and have an English menu for you without asking !!

They have four different areas to sit in. Our favourite is a sort of covered courtyard. In summer they can open the roof and in winter it is closed and they have some very warm heaters above to make you feel warm and cosy.

There is a nice bit of history about the building in the menu, so worth being British and getting the English language menu, unless you read comfortably in Dutch or French !!

It does get quite busy, being a popular venue and sometimes things take a little longer to arrive. But as you have probably been on your feet for some time, it is nice to have a little extra time to rest and relax in nice surroundings.

There is always the patisserie on your way out, where you can take away some nice cakes for later !!

“Lovely experience!”
Reviewed January 19, 2014

Went in to warm up after visiting the Ice Sculpture Festival. Lovely atmosphere. Warm tea, cold beer and good food. The kids got to make their own hot chocolate but melting a square of chocolate into warm milk. Fun!

“Now there's a proper waffle!”
Reviewed January 10, 2014

Wanting to have a nice waffle at a sit down place instead of the default waffle stands on the Brugge streets, we opted to pop into this patisserie/restaurant. One side of the shop is the patisserie where you can get lovely cakes and breads for take away. The other side is a sit down cafe/restaurant. They have a full lunch menu with omelets and sandwiches.
We had some waffles, coffee and apple beignets. The fresh, warm pastries were worth the wait (we waited about 30min). Chocolate sauce that is just the right sweetness (not nutella!) and fresh cream are on the side, so you can doctor your waffle the way you want.
Coffee comes with some Belgian seashell chocolates and a small piece of apple cake, which were nice compliments.

Would stop in there again, and make a booking next time!

“We never visit Bruges without eating here”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

This is one of Bruge's finest gems. We always have a light lunch here one day at least; fabulous omelettes, toasties and salads, snacks and pastries. Great coffee served with little treats. I avoid sugar so if I let them know the day before a lovely pastry without sugar is put together for me. Gets busy but always worth a visit.
