Owner description: Start your visit to Bruges in the Historium: a wonderful historical-experience attraction that takes you back in time to the Golden Age of Bruges. Cinematic sets, with music and special effects, propel you into a love story, based on Jan Van Eyck’s painting ‘Virgin and Child with Canon van der Paele'. For anyone who wants a taste of virtual reality: the VR Experience takes you on a virtual tour of medieval Bruges. You travel back in time and get to explore the historical city interactively. The Historium is housed in a historical building on the market square, where the Waterhalle once stood. The Waterhalle was the central shipping entrepot of the thriving mercantile centre Bruges. Bruges was renowned for its luxury textiles and clothing. But the art of Bruges was also highly prized: precious metals, manuscripts, miniatures and of course, the painted panels of Flemish Primitives, such as Hans Memling and Jan van Eyck. In the attraction and the VR Experience, the Waterhalle is superbly reconstructed. You can follow the story in your own language on an audio guide (10 languages). After your visit, you can enjoy a nice Belgian beer or other refreshments in the Duvelorium Grand Beer Cafe... with a panoramic view on the market square. Historium Brugge is open daily from 10h00 a.m. – 6h00 p.m. (tickets until 5h00 p.m.). Accessible for all ages – Family Trail included. Audio guides in 10 different languages.

The " experience " seems to be aimed at 4 year olds until the brief full frontal nudity in one of the rooms! The whole thing throws very little light on Brugges itself, telling an unrealistic, trite " love story based loosely on a painting. Boy meets girl( and parrot!!!) falls in love, marries and has a child while the artist is still looking for his brushes!

A story of life in the city during the year 1435 is unfolded on screen and on set as the Historium visitor progresses through a maze of 7 rooms. It is quite a unique, and interesting, show. You wear headsets as you proceed to listen to the actors in the story...... a new chapter, so to speak, is presented in each room. The entire show takes about 50 minutes and cost is 11 euros per adult. Well worth it ..... highly recommend!!

At the end of a lovely day exploring the beauty of Brugge we decided to go into the Historium before we got back on the train to Brussels, I'm really glad we did.
You are given a head set to wear while you walk through a series of rooms that tell a story set in Brugge of long ago. It was a sweet story, nicely told. The sets were interesting and the special effects made me smile but most of all I felt that the historical fact woven through the story brought together everything I'd seen for myself whilst walking around Brugge during the day.
There is also a lovely view of the square from the balcony when you come out of the tour. Definitely worth a look.

We visited Historium the last day we were recently in Brugge. It is a very interesting concept, and we were impressed by the way history was presented. Roaming through the middle ages and learning more about life in Brugge during that time period was great. It is housed in a lovely old building and is such a unique experience. When we were finished seeing everything, we enjoyed the view of the square from the balcony. Seeing the panorama of the market from that vantage point was wonderful - great perspective when higher up and able to see the view of the church steeple, all the other buildings on the square. Highly recommend

We only got a discount here with our Bruges City Card but for 11 Euros for the two of us it was certainly worth it.

We were taken around 7 different themed rooms where we learnt about medieval Bruges and Jan Van Eyck. I don't like museums where you walk around for ages because unless you're really dedicated to the subject matter you're going to get bored.

The Historium was different though. We were there for an hour max and my partner and I learnt soooooooooooo much. Also the view of the Markt from the top of the museum was great! Well worth the visit.
