Owner description: Start your visit to Bruges in the Historium: a wonderful historical-experience attraction that takes you back in time to the Golden Age of Bruges. Cinematic sets, with music and special effects, propel you into a love story, based on Jan Van Eyck’s painting ‘Virgin and Child with Canon van der Paele'. For anyone who wants a taste of virtual reality: the VR Experience takes you on a virtual tour of medieval Bruges. You travel back in time and get to explore the historical city interactively. The Historium is housed in a historical building on the market square, where the Waterhalle once stood. The Waterhalle was the central shipping entrepot of the thriving mercantile centre Bruges. Bruges was renowned for its luxury textiles and clothing. But the art of Bruges was also highly prized: precious metals, manuscripts, miniatures and of course, the painted panels of Flemish Primitives, such as Hans Memling and Jan van Eyck. In the attraction and the VR Experience, the Waterhalle is superbly reconstructed. You can follow the story in your own language on an audio guide (10 languages). After your visit, you can enjoy a nice Belgian beer or other refreshments in the Duvelorium Grand Beer Cafe... with a panoramic view on the market square. Historium Brugge is open daily from 10h00 a.m. – 6h00 p.m. (tickets until 5h00 p.m.). Accessible for all ages – Family Trail included. Audio guides in 10 different languages.

This walk through exhibit gave us a view of Brugge in 1435. The tour takes about 30 minutes, but at the end there are a lot of exhibits with commentary on the headset which are included in the price. It was a good way to get a view into the past importance of the city.

This was an interesting concept - visually really well planned out and they use sight sound and smell to convey the atmosphere of medieval Bruges. I thought it was well worth the money rather than the Dhali exhibit which was also on the square.

We’d read the reviews on Trip Advisor, so didn’t bother with the museum – we went straight to the Duvelorium. The board with a selection of three beers is not good value – unless you are trying to see how many different Belgium beers you can drink while in Bruges.

The beers themselves were good and the view over the Markt square from their balcony was excellent. It opens daily from 10 in the morning to 6 in the evening. We arrived about 11 and soon after it began to fill up. At this point we headed for the Rose Red bar a couple of minutes’ walk away.

This silly attraction possibly would have been considered cutting-edge entertainment in 1975, but in 2013 it is woefully quaint and frequently boring. The little story about Jan van Eyck's assistant is disjointed and shallow, and their claims that this attraction will "bring the middle ages to life" is ridiculous. Do something else with your time and money. Go see the swans.

For an entertaining look at medieval life in the salon of a master painter, this is highly recommended. We found it a great way to bring history to life.
