“Great Location, Excellent Value and Welcoming Atmosphere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2010

Spent 3 days here on a recent visit with friends and occupied 2 different rooms on the second floor. Both rooms were clean and, beautifully decorated, and comfortably furnished with private baths. My room on the front of the property looked out on St. Jakobstraat, my friends' room to the rear of the property over a lovely walled garden and ancient rooftops. The hotel's central location comes with a certain amount of ambient noise from pedestrian street traffic in the evenings, but that is to be expected, as it is less than 2 blocks from the main square & belltower which makes it an ideal location for a visit to Bruges.

Breakfast was excellent and abundant, including fresh squeezed orange juice, pastries, and an egg prepared to order, as well as beautiful prosciutto. My friend's recent disability made walking any distance in Bruges difficult, and our hostess was extremely considerate in arranging use of
a well chair which allowed us to roam the city with ease. If your looking for comfort, value & a great location, The Allegria is hard to beat. We had a memorable stay.

Thank you Veronique!

We traveled with our adult daughter and stayed in the Chocolate room. The hostess warned us ahead of time about the space, the public area behind, etc. We found it to be cozy and the view exceptional. The breakfast was perfect, fresh squeezed orange juice and eggs made to order with an assigned table so not to worry about finding a place to sit. The hostess was also very knowledgeable about the area having lived there her whole life. We also traveled to Amsterdam and London and found less value and hospitality in both places. We loved it here.

I asked about a reservation and tried to confirm it the next day. The lady on the phone was the most aggressive and unfriendly person I have ever spoken to. Then she told me that no room would be available any more. I think she was able to sell the requested room for more than one night... Anyway - I wouldn´t want to stay in a hotel with someone of that attitude anyway. The stuff I read about her on other reviews unfortunately seems to be true.

Stayed hear with My wife and another couple over the weekend 9-11th July. Read all the reviews about the lady in charge and how polite and welcoming she was. It couldn't have been further away from reality. As soon as we got there she unprompted decided how fortunate we were to get rooms at her B&B as she could have filled the rooms nine times over! Not exactly what you want to hear whilst checking in - a 'hello' would have sufficed. She had a very headmistress tone about her and continually talked down to us. Not entirely sure if she felt she was better than us. After being reminded of simple house rules we went to our rooms- the chocolate and olive room. We had the chocolate room and it was a little scruffy and cramped but no big deal. It was 30 odd degrees celcius and no air con. I went back to reception to check and was scolded for asking and reminded that it was only a B&B and 3 star and if I wanted anyone those kind of basics then I should have picked a 5 star hotel. I then asked if there were any fans to which she retorted that we should put up with the weather as she also had to put up with it - charming!!! With that in mind I just resigned myself to not bothering to interact with her. We changed clothes and left for the evening out and upon closing the front door which has a faulty closer on it, the door slammed. Yes, you guessed it, we got told off for that too. Once back in the evening after a night out and weather still in the high twenties we tried to go to sleep only to be disturbed until 4am as next door is an outdoor drinking area of a bar or hotel plus large bins where bar staff dispose of glass bottles. As you can imagine the noise was rowdy and drunk revellers drank until the wee hours. Couldn't close the windows as it was sweltering in the room. So didn't get much sleep both Fri and Sat night. All together a complete nightmare with 5 star prices and hostel/YMCA service. Either we caught her on a bad weekend or she doesn't like Asians. Will let you guys decide. I have travelled many parts of the world and consider myself cultured enough to appreciate different cultures and mannerisms but this lady showed no respect or common courtesy to her guests.

We stayed at Alegria for 5 days. We were in the Chocolate Room. It looks out over 15th roofs and a garden. Truly lovely. Quiet too. The hotel well appointed. 2 blocks from the main square. A truly wonderful experience. We'll stay there again.

The day we arrived was terrible because we had lost our backpack during our travel between Brussels and Bruges. Then I understood why this place was named Alegria. Mrs. Veronique was so helpful on helping us and our gray day just changed. We recovered our backpack a couple days later. Meanwhile we enjoyed our stay at this wonderful place. Very well located, clean and a nice breakfast. It was not perfect because we had a big luggage and there is no elevator to access the rooms, so we had to carry it. If we have a chance to come back to Bruges we will definitely stay here again.

We booked 2 rooms the "Olive Room" and the 'Zebra Room' for 2 nights.
Both rooms are facing the busy street..which leads into the central square. The rooms were excellently furnished and had great color schemes..we asked for extra pillows and they were there as promised.

The Olive Room (where we stayed) had a 'stand-up' shower and was quite big for Europe..The Zebra room had a tub and shower and the overall room was a bit smaller. The beds were king size and were very comfortable. Each room came with a kettle and a mini-fridge...a big plus as we brought champagne to relax with after a hectic day of shopping and sightseeing.
.
My friend who has MS had a difficult time climbing up the stairs to the 1st floor...being from Canada the 1st floor is the ground floor so we thought there were no stairs...our mistake.

The owners had a garage(keyed entry) next door on a side street where we kept our car it was great for bringing back all the shopping items we purchased. (There was a charge of 10 Euros a night well worth it)

Both breakfasts were excellent with fresh warm croissants and sweet buns...fresh orange juice in a champagne flute when you first sit down...lots of cold cuts, salami proscuitto..and of course CHEESE and Belgian Bread...plus cold cereal, fruit, yogurt and of course Coffee or tea. Freshly cooked eggs any way you want them were also provided.

There was also for the ladies a purse bag and hat shop next door run by Veronique.(the hostess)..both our wives bought something...all in all a great stay..would highly recommend.
