“Excellent family hotel”
Reviewed March 29, 2010

Hotel provides an excellent, friendly service at a reasonable price. Its location is good - 5 minutes walk from Zand, 10 minutes walk from centre; bus outside to station. The reception is very friendly and helpful; en-suite room was spacious and clean. Breakfast limited but quite adequate. There is no bar or lounge but, given that Bruges has 100's of bars and restaurants, that it not a problem.

It`s not too expensive. Rooms may fit 3 persons. Great staff. Lovely city.

Pleasant location about 15 minutes walk from Bruges Markt and 5 minutes walk from several restaurants in t'Zand square. Need to time your arrival to co-incide with Reception being open (check times), otherwise you can't get in when you first arrive. No problem once you are given the key. Clean and friendly with good continental breakfast provided. A pleasant 20 minute canal-side walk from the train station.

This was a small hotel in a quiet location. The concert hall and 't Zand square were only an 8 minute walk away; the city centre was an easy 15 minute walk and the train station only a 20 minute walk if you did not want to take a taxi. The hotel only offered bed and breakfast but this was no problem given the number of excellent restaurants and bars within easy walking distance. The buffet style continental breakfast was plentiful, fresh and varied. The rooms and bathrooms were clean when we arrived and kept clean during our stay. The rooms we stayed in only had fairly basic provisions, but they did have a mini-bar and multi-channel TV. During our stay there were a number of other guests staying at the hotel but we experienced no noise from them at all. However access to some of the rooms could be difficult for disabled or elderly guests.
The staff were very friendly and always helpful. They were happy to look after our luggage when we arrived early before our check-in time and when we departed late after our room check-out. In all this gave us nearly an extra whole day to explore the city.We felt that our four day/three night stay was very good value for money for anyone intending to see the city of Bruges and its environs.

We ALL found the hotel rooms very clean and comfortable. Well worth the money. The breakfast on offer was plentiful and fresh, also, as we had to leave early in the morning it was arranged that some food would be left in one of the rooms for us. The bread rolls were delivered fresh just before we left the hotel.
The walk into Brugge was just right, especially to work up an appetite and to walk off some of the calories. If you can't walk far find another hotel.
So from my wife, myself and our friends, we would like to say a huge thank you to the staff of the Hotel Montovani.

This has to be one of the worst hotels my husband and I have ever stayed at. Our room was downstairs at the front and it felt like we had landed in someone's front room.

The staff vanished at 6pm and there was no tea or coffee making facilities and the promised complimentary tea and coffee never materialised.

I love children but being woken at 8 every morning by the receptionst's toddler driving his toy tractor repeatedly into the bedroom door was not the most restful way to wake up.

Of prime concern was the en suite which did not contain a hand basin, even though there was room for one. To wash one's hands you had to walk all round the bedroom to an alcove on the other side.

For two of us there was one tiny single wardrobe.

If I was a student backpacking I would probably like this hotel. However as a middle-aged couple on a short break it felt more like a hostel than an hotel and was definitely not what we have experienced before in 2 star accommodation in Europe.

  • Liked — proximity to town centre and railway station
  • Disliked — our room

Stayed here for 2 nites for a quin family room but only 4 of us stayed here at 120euros per nite. Kinda far away from the main area (15 min walk). Entrance was via a small street but looks like an alley way. THe owner was very nice with her 2 yr old. Breakfast was self service continental. Their breakfast starts at 8:30am which doesn't help since we had to depart b4 8am. But she did offer us to take some the bread/jam that was delivered very early in the mornig. THere are no staff there past 6pm but an emergency toll free number. Our room was the family room on the top floor #25. Arrived late at nite - opened front door using code which they provided for late arrivals. Got keys, walked up 2 flights with our luggages, opened the door to room #25, <gasp> saw another set of winding staircase! It probably would have been more charming if we were not so tired. The room was large, but the folding cot folded when we sat on it, and the other twin bed sagged terribly when we sat on it. It was nice to open windows for fresh air. The full size bed was nice and firm. There was a Non-working stove (no utensils/plates avail) and a mini fridge that was stocked which we didn't use. Bathroom was quaint, outside of room on same level, had no shower curtain and was difficult to wash w/o making a watery mess. No amenities provided. Hairdryer avail at front desk. Room was alittle dusty. Owner able to call for taxi (6 euros) for us in advance of our departure to Bruge train station. No free maps provided but only 7 min walk to the Z'and square (tourist info office). I probably would choose somewhere closer to the canals for the price we paid.

  • Liked — Good size room
  • Disliked — More Stairs, too far from all the action
