“Good place, despite the renovations in progress”
Reviewed April 11, 2013

Stayed there in March with three friends, we had a lovely renovated room on the top floor. The location is perfect and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Even though they are in the middle of renovating the building we had no complaints, I will probably stay there again when the renovations are complete.

Since Bruges is a very little town, it is possible to walk everywhere in the city. The hostel is in between the city center and the train station and the only good thing about the hostel was that. They were renovating the building, so only one toilet and two showers (one of them was together with the toilet so it was not possible to use the toilet if someone is taking a shower) were available for the whole 5-staged hostel. We had to wait more than an hour to take a shower although it was in the middle of the night. Beds were dirty and stainy and you need to change the sheets by yourself which may be normal if you keep in mind that it is a hostel. Breakwast was very bad. Plates, cups, knives and forks were not clean since guests wash them by themselves after eating. It was not good in general but if you don't mind the cleanliness too much and you want to save a few euros, this hostel can be preferred.

Thank you for your opinion. A couple remarks about your comment though:

• There are 7 (!!!!) toilets in the hostel, not 1 like the person is saying..
• There are 3 floors in the building, not 5 like this person is saying..
• Beds are very clean and brand new (see pictures on Hostelworld)
• Sheets need to be thrown in a basket upon check-out, as in most hostels worldwide
• Breakfast is very good value for money, only € 4 per person with a wide range of things to choose from.
• Don't confuse construction with lack of cleanliness. Everyone is staying in a brand new, renovated room. Parts that are still under construction are sealed off from guests.

Lybeer Hostel is in the south of Bruge’s city centre. It can be easily reached from the station by walk (about 10 min) and is very close to Bruge’s main sightseeing spots (less than 10 min to walk to the Belfry). The hostels of Bruge collaborate and provide free sightseeing tours (we wanted to participate, but unfortunately the Lybeer’s staff gave us wrong information) as well as beer tasting events (6 beers, 10€). They also provide a special map (for free) made by locals, which looks great, but is a little bit outdated regarding opening hours and prices. Lybeer offers breakfast for 4€ per person and day, but not from January to March, so we couldn’t try it.
At the time we stayed at Lybeer’s (March 2013) the hostel was being renovated. First of all: This renovation was due at least 10 years! The kitchen looked terrible, we didn’t dare to cook, and the railing of the stairs is extremely dangerous, only fixed with duck tape at some points (but they will fix kitchen and railing). We knew that there would be a renovation when we booked, but only imagined paint work in the hallway or something. Actually, it was much more drastic: The workers worked from 8.30am to 9 pm with very loud devices, you had to dodge the workers all the time, wood was laying around, many showers and toilets were closed. During our stay, only two showers and four toilets were available for all guests!!! The rooms that are already renovated look great, but there are still lots of work to do! (They said, it will be finished in the first quarter of 2013, but this is very unlikely to happen.) Furthermore, it was extremely cold in the whole hostel (especially in the hallway), no matter if renovated or not. The WiFi was very slow with many interruptions; usual browsing was very difficult, watching videos nearly impossible. In the kitchen and the rooms only cold water was available; no wonder, that dishes and cutlery were never really clean.
The staff often apologized and we got a room more quiet after complaining - but nevertheless, it was way too much inconvenience! Therefore, we are sorry to say: We cannot recommend Lybeer hostel! We only saw the other hostels from the outside, but they (especially Charlie Rockets) looked way better! It would have been better to completely close the hostel for 2 months, renovate it and the reopen it, than to bother the guests with unfinished rooms and heavy working noise. So, if you plan to stay at Lybeer’s anyway, make sure, all renovations are completely done.

These people were staying in the only floor where there were still renovations going on. EVERYONE else stays very far away from any construction. New owners arrived last year and immediately started doing renovations: the new rooms look GREAT! There are 7 showers (!!!!!!), not 2 as mentioned. We offer 3 different Wifi-networks (free!) and they work awesome! Another 2 and a half months and everything will be renovated, there will be a new kitchen, an outside courtyard and a terrace on the roof for BBQ's. These people might have been better off in a hotel if they didn't like the inside of the rooms, which actually look like hotel rooms. But thank you for your opinion, which is different from 95% of our guests (see reviews on Hostelworld).

I stayed here with a friend and had a great time. We were in one of the dorms (I think it had four sets of bunk beds) and had no complaints. They provided lockers for our luggage, and the bathroom connected to the room was very clean. There was a decent breakfast included in the price, and the staff were helpful and friendly. The hostel has a great location, easy to get to from both the train station and the main part of town. It's in Bruges, so naturally everything is only a ten minute walk from everything else (10 minutes maximum), but I felt like we were very well located nonetheless.

My husband and I stayed here while passing through Belgium on a backpacking trip through Europe. We stayed on the top floor of the hostel which had just been newly renovated. The bathroom was new, water was hot and the room was clean and secure. The staff was also very friendly and helpful. We loved exploring the beautiful, medieval town of Bruges and this place was everything we were looking for during our stay. Even though renovations were in progress I recommend this hostel if you are looking for simple, secure and affordable accomodation in Bruges!

A few things in recent comments reflect on the current state of the building. Considering the renovations are taking place I would argue that your spending to much time in the room. After a wintery stay in one the best located hostels in Bruges I can easily mark this at 5 stars.

Easy to get to from the station and it is located right off one of the main roads. The bonus is the square right next to it. Loads of restaurants that are better priced than those at the Markt. Considering this trip was me flying solo I didn't think I would have as much fun as I did. There are bars located also just nearby and literally everywhere in Bruges is about 10-20 minute walk away.

The only downside is that there was no curtain in my room, the day after the beer festival (a bonus on this trip as it wasn't planned) was a struggle.

Room Tip: I stayed in the private room, up on the third floor. The staircase makes for a great photo!

We stayed in December. We stayed in one of the already renovated rooms which are clean, pretty and well laid out. The ladders and railings for the bunks are particularly impressive. We used one of the renovated bathrooms which was really nice too, but on another floor. The stairs are steep and challanging. The location is great, an okay walk from the station and to the town center. Plenty of heat and hot water when we were there. We would stay there again.
