This private house on the outskirts of the delightful city of Bruges was perfect for our four night stay. Assebroek is a suburb about a 15 minute walk from the gate of the old town, and about ten minutes further on to the Markt and central areas.

The gasthof has six letting rooms, all nicely furnished and bright and airy. The residential setting makes for a calm and homely feel, with a big shady garden to relax in after a sightseeing session. The whole place is very clean and the rooms are serviced every day, including fresh fluffy towels. Breakfast is continental of course, but with lots of choice of cheese and meats, and boiled eggs cooked to order. There's a fridge in the room to keep your wine cool. Carrefour is right next door to go and buy some!

The main thing about staying here is that you can park up the car and forget about it. If you don't fancy the walk to and fro from the action, buses run from the main road to the bus station in the city centre every 10 minutes at most. Some connect directly to the railway station too if you are coming by train.

We took in the antique and flea market on 5th August and had a great time, including getting some great bargains. Bruges is a real treat in mediaeval style on the doorstep of Europe, only an hour from Dunkirk.

My partner and I recently stayed at Gathof Groenhove, having booked specifically for the location, i.e. outside of centre and free parking; we'd heard the rumours that parking in the centre of Bruges is problematic. The B&B was a beautifully restored house and our room (1st Floor) was very large with a view of the front garden. The room was lovely, nicely decorated and the most comfortable bed; however the bathroom was a slight let down, it reminded me of an NHS ward bathroom, could do with modernising; would've also been nice to have tea/coffee facilities in the room as well. That aside, we had a lovely stay and breakfast was lovely.

Decided to go to Bruges for my girl friends birthday and booked the B&B over the internet.
We caught the Euro Tunnel train at about 06:50 and was therefore off and driving on the continent before 08:00 UK time.
A beautiful drive up to Bruges, cloudless skies with the hood down and driving at a sedate speed we were in Bruges at the B&B by about 10:00.
We knew we were early for getting our room, but the owner didn't mind us leaving our car on the premises so we could disappear and do some walking in and around the city.
Got back early evening, changed and went out again for a meal, walking of course.
It's 1.5 Kilometres to the centre of the city, that's 0.92 miles to us Brit's, didn't even break into a sweat!
We had room number 1 on the ground floor which is through the secondary dining room in the corner of the building.
The room was large with nice views out onto the gardens and water features. We also had a large bathroom with a Jacuzzi bath big enough for 2, and with a bottle of wine we settled into it each night for a good soak after a days exploring.
Breakfast was served from 08:30 onwards, and the owner was in attendance to offer refills for tea and coffee to save you having to get up.
There was a good selection of continental style foods on offer, and fresh boiled eggs were brought out on request.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this Gastof and will be using it again when we go back to continue exploring Bruges and its surrounding area.
Plan is to take our bikes next time as the ones the Gastof used to lend out have been withdrawn, probably due to lack of use.
Only piece of really useful advice is when walking, even on the path, walk towards the flow of traffic, that way you will see the bikes on the cycle path coming towards you which also includes mopeds and scooters travelling at speed!

Room Tip: Other reviews said they had a small room. Plump for number 1, if it's available you won't b...

My partner and I arrived very early, but that was no problem. We parked the car, checked-in, and the owner gave us some information and tips on what to see in town. We were given the key to our room and the code to the house so we could get in whenever we wanted. It is a few minutes walk to the canal, and another 5-10 minutes to the center of town. I really don't know why everyone is moaning about the distance. Bruges is not a big city and it is flat. The house is lovely architecturally and the grounds are pretty. It is rare to find a dwelling of this size in Bruges. Breakfast can be had in the conservatory or garden, weather permitting. It is typical European fare; cake, croissants, rolls, cereals, meat, cheese, and boiled eggs. The coffee is Nespresso. Our host stands at the ready to refill when he sees we have empty cups. Everything is fresh and neatly laid out. Breakfast is from 8:30, a little later start compared to some places, but that means you don't have to rush first thing. If the meat, cheese or anything else ran out, our host happily got us some more. Bearing in mind that this is a B&B and not a big hotel, our host put out enough food at any one time so that there would be no wastage. Our room was large and clean. The bed was extremely comfortable. The bathroom was big with a jacuzzi bath that fit two and we made good use of it after spending the whole day walking around the town. There is a pleasant bar around the corner where the prices are lower than in town and a few restaurants and cafes. There is also a supermarket right next door which is very handy for picking up some supplies and stocking up on Belgian Beers and French wine. This B&B may not be in the centre of town, but it is lovely and quiet to come back to after the hoards you come across in the touristy areas of Bruges. If there was a disappointment, it was that the bikes were not available as they needed mending. We will certainly come back here with our own bikes next time.

Room Tip: Number one was great for us! It's on the ground floor and the only bedroom on that floor.

Nice house in a lovely garden a few ks outside Bruges. Great indian restaurant around the corner. Good breakfast, hepful host, clean, if slightly small, room, but some plumbing problems which may well be endemic. Location was not ideal, as others have noted. Being a tourist in Bruges requires lots of energy and the walk to and from town was a bit much. On the other hand, the central parking provided by the town council is great - we drove in! Slightly more expensive than others of this standard, but that may be due to its location - in Bruges. The city galleries are great for early Dutch masters.

We got to the B&B late due to traffic problems on the UK side of the journey. We phoned the owner as soon as we got out of the tunnel to let him know our arrival time. All he did was complain. The breakfast next morning was sparse to say the least. We asked if the was any more selection only to be told that was it. Basically we should have up earlier if we wanted the full selection.

The location looks close to the town centre on a map but it is a brisk 20 minute walk or a leisurely 40 minute stroll.

The only plus side I can think of was the on site car park. But taking everything to account I'd rather book a town centre 'hotel' and pay extra to park the car.

Will definitely not be visiting this establishment again.
