“A great place to stay : an ideal spot near the centre of Bruges”
Reviewed October 8, 2008

We found the details of this family-run Hotel Patritius on the web, and booked a room for three nights on a trip to Bruges to celebrate a birthday.

We couldn't have booked a nicer hotel in a more ideal spot, just a few minutes walk from the market square and not a long way from the many attractions found in this beautiful city.

The room we had, on the third floor, was large and very comfortable.

Breakfast offered a good choice of cereals, continental bread, fruit and boiled or scrambled eggs - with tea or coffee, of course.

There is a lot to see in Bruges. We particularly liked the displays in the Museum of the old St John's Hospital (especially the art work of Hans Memling in the chapel), a trip on the canal which gave very different angles on many of the buildings, and the Breydel De Coninck restaurant (conveniently half way between the hotel and the market square).

Summing up ? An excellent location, within fairly easy walking distances of most points of interest in Bruges

We stayed at the Patritius Hotel in Bruge for four nights during a bitterly cold spell in March, arriving on a mid-afternoon local train from Brussels.
Luckily our luggage was fairly light as the walk to the hotel from the train station was a good half hour (allowing for a few wrong turns) and as soon as we arrived at the Patritius we knew we had chanced upon a gem.
Housed in a lovely old building a short walk from the main square, our room was absolutely enormous. I think we were extremely lucky with our allocated room as when we casually glanced in other rooms (as you do!) when the doors are wide open during cleaning, our's seemed to be twice the size. The bed was so comfortable and we didn't hear any noise from the street below.
Breakfast was fine with a choice of eggs and set us up for a day's sighseeing in beautiful Bruges.
Bruges is a gorgeous city with plenty to keep you occupied for a few days.
I would recommend the Patritius to anyone who likes a hotel full of character.

We have just spent the weekend (29th August 2008) in Bruges (our third visit) and stayed at the Hotel Patrituis and have to say that we agree with all the previous positive reviews. It is within 2 minutes walk of the Markt and Burg and quite central for most of the attractions.

The owners of the hotel are quite charming and nothing is too much trouble for them to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The rooms, although quite basic, are very spacious, extremely clean and very comfortable. The decor is quite tasteful and in keeping with a building of its historic nature. the bathroom is a very good size, although be careful when getting in and out of the bath, it is quite slippery. We did have to ask for more towels as there were only two per person, one was a small hand towel and the other just slightly larger (not a bath sheet) but our request was speedily accommodated.

The breakfast is a typical continental breakfast although we were offered either boiled or scrambled egg, which is not typical of continental breakfasts.

The common rooms are beautiful and representative of a bygone era, very relaxing and comfortabe. The garden should also get a mention - a quiet haven of peace and tranquility, it's hard to believe how close you are to the hustle and bustle of the town.

One point to make - if possible ask for a room overlooking the garden, our room overlooked the street which was extremely noisy even in the small hours of the morning. It was possible to close the windows which totally blocked out all the noise but it was very hot the weekend we were there and we needed to open the windows to get some air in.

There is a delightful restaurant only a few minutes walk from the hotel in Philipstockstraat - Au Petit Grand, we have been there before and cannot recommend it highly enough.

Another recommendation is the Carpe Diem which is near the Minnewater in Wijngaardstraat just off Katelijnestraat. Although technically a tea room they serve wonderful lunches.

Bruges is a beautiful town with much to commend it. We have always enjoyed our visits there. The people are so friendly, there are some beautiful churches, the architecture is quite amazing and a wonderful change from the steel and glass structures of today. A trip on the canal boats is a must as is the horse and carriage ride.

Last but not least - the chocolates, the waffles, the pancakes!! Don't expect to diet during your stay!

The family of staff are very friendly and willing to help out. The hotel is literally 5mins walk from the Burg towards Markt in a quiet area.

The room we had (26) was a tad small but clean and functional. I gather most hotels are smallish. It has a double bed with garden view and large walk-in shower.

Breakfast was typical cold buffet style with some very very fresh orange juice and nice scrambled egg.

Beware of mosquitoes mind! I didn't think Bruges would have them (in end Aug) so we were eaten with keeping the window open to cool the room down a bit.

The Hotel Patritius is a treat. It is located just blocks from the center but on a lovely quiet street. The owners do a fantastic job of making you feel special and pampered. They have done a great job remodeling the historic building making it comfortable and attractive.

Since I made my reservations at the last minute, I had to switch rooms during my four nights there. All were pleasant and charming. I really appreciated the small fridge with cold drinks in it. And it is lovely to have an elevator when traveling with heavy luggage.

My morning highlight was their complete breakfast in the lovely breakfast room. Lots of different choices, hot and cold - in a beautiful setting.

The Hotel Patritius is a great place in a great city.

We stayed at the Hotel Patritius (pronounced Pah-tri-huis, I believe) while in Brugge to see the Procession of the Holy Blood. It is a lovely building with parking for a few cars in the back and a small garden area. located at Ridderstraat 11. The elegant but simple lobby, dining room and sitting room have tall ceilings with lots of windows and light. There is an elevator to the upper floors. It is run by a young couple who were most helpful. Our room was large and spacious with purple and white toile decor. We overlooked the street but never heard any noise or traffic at night. Breakfast was very good with the standard eggs, toast, bagels, fruit, yogurt, cereal etc. We really appreciated our location just a few blocks from the two town squares, and just a few more blocks to where the canal cruises depart. For dinner, we were referred to the Spijshuis De Dis and it was fabulous Dutch food. It is located on a small, tree covered square not far from the Hotel P. and has several recommended restaurants around the square. It was a splurge (most meals in Holland and Belgium were!! ) but worth every penny. One of the best meals we had on the trip.
In getting to the hotel, you may need to call for directions or get a good map ahead of your visit since some of the streets and canal bridges are under repair.

The Hotel Patritius is very well-located in the centre of Brugge.

We found the reception staff friendly and helpful, and were provided with a small local map on registering.

The room, although relatively small, was very clean with a pleasant view, and the bathroom contained a shower, wash basin and toilet (but sadly nowhere to hang clothes).

The hotel has a lift, which is a big bonus if you have lots of luggage.

The breakfasts were very good being a spread of breads, cheese, yoghurt and salami. Fresh eggs, a choice of scrambled or boiled, are offered at breakfast. I chose scrambled, very freshly prepared with a lovely buttery taste.

The only downside to this hotel is the music playing in the lounge area - heavy going chamber music which meant you didn't want to hang around much in the lounge if the weather was bad.
