“Great Hotel - We would stay again”
Reviewed July 12, 2011

Great hotel - we would go back.
Location - very central. The area felt safe and approx 5 minutes steady walk from Burg square, which leads into the Markt square.
Rooms - clean and modern, not massive but enough room. Complimentary safe.
Bar - make the most of the bars Happy Hour (4-6pm) where many drinks are half price - look for the H on the drinks list, served with complimentary snacks. Its seems to be pot luck for if you get the grumpy or the smiley barman, there is one of each! Lovely little courtyard area outside the bar to relax in - a nice escape from local smokers in the bar area.
Breakfast - plenty to choose from, hot and cold options and served until 11am. Breakfast room very pleasant, views of the little pond or over the internal courtyard.
Parking - was fine for us, we emailed before hand to organise it.
Dining Out - lots of places available. Some restaurants in a good location by the canal behind the buildings on your left hand side, before the first bridge - though they do seem to finish serving quite early. We had some great value fixed price 3 course menus ranging from €17 - €30 p/person in the Makt square. Drinks - House wine started around €10 per bottle. Beers around €3-4 a bottle.
Activities - the canal boat trip is a great start and you receive discount when booking this hotel, final cost around €7 p/person. After the boat trip, we found the best way to see things in detail was to take a steady walk, there is something to see on every corner and you could just while away a couple of days meandering around the pretty streets and cafes, without stepping foot into the other great places!
Market - a lovely market, full variety of food and flowers, a great place to buy a picnic.
Chocolates - we bought ours from the chocolate shop in the Burg square, where you can also buy a cool bag for €1 extra. The lady was very funny, if not a little scarey! But you can buy them everywhere!

We stayed for one night with two kids (age 12 and 9) and had two rooms booked. The hotel is very good and we loved it..Kids used the pool which and enjoyed it ! the breakfast buffet was good as well.
The front desk was very helpful in giving us tips on where to eat and how to get discounts, if any in the area..

My wife and I stayed here for one night on our way back from Brussels to the Channel ports.

We booked it as a result of finding it on an 'offer' website, reduced from about 180 Euros to 100 Euros for one night Bed & Breakfast. We could have picked a number of hotels of a similar price and location but chose this one because it was conveniently located and showed on their website as having a swimming pool.

The hotel itself would be described as 'charming' It is on a main street not far from the centre of Bruges and has limited off road parking at 14 Euros per 24 hours. You also get a Bruges Pass which entitles you to reduced entry to various attractions. we did not take advantage of this so do not know how good this is nor whether other hotels offer the same.

Our room (Superior, one up from Standard) was nicely furnished with a King Size bed; clean, tidy, of a good size with a well furnished and stocked bathroom.

The breakfast (continental) was well presented with a good selection of fruit (albeit tinned), cold meats, cheese, breads and pastries.

There is free WiFi in the lobby area

So why aren't I raving about it and rushing back?

Although very nice I think we paid a reasonable price for what we got from the hotel. If we had paid 180 Euros I would be rather diisappointed. The swimming pool which shows up very well in the picture is only about 4 metres long and 2 metres wide.

Half the TV channels did not work.

Only a selection of rooms have air conditioning.

As I say above I would not expect a 4 Star hotel to serve up tinned fruit at breakfast.

the staff spoke good English and answered queries and requests for help

Thank you for staying with us and for your comments.

We would like to inform prospective guests that the dimensions of the hotel swimming pool are 3.2m x 8.5m, providing ample space for some relaxation before or after a busy day on the town (the pool is open daily from 08:00-20:00hrs, towels and changing cabins are available there).

TV programming available in all rooms includes 2 or more of the main channels from each of the countries surrounding Belgium, as well as international news, documentary and music channels.

The hotel is located in the historic city centre (which is surrounded by the main waterway), a mere 5 minutes on foot from the central Burg square, as the map available on this will show.

Hotel
I took my elderly mum to Bruges and wanted a hotel that was central and The Flanders was perfect. The staff were very friendly at all times, the room was lovely and breakfast was ample with a lot of choice.

Restaurants
Restaurants in Bruges are very pricey so be aware and try to find hidden little places in the side streets. We had one near our hotel (forgotten the name but its across the street and you turn right from the hotel, it looks like a little pub) the menu was very limited but the food home cooked, and yummy and the price was very affordable.

Excursions
Excursions are expensive, we did the horse and cart at 18 euros each, a full day trip at 60 euros each but the best value trip was the boat trip at 6.9 euros and it was very relaxing.

Bruges
All in all a great place to visit with lots to do and see but take plenty of spending money as nothing is cheap!

Just arrived home after a 4 day / 3 night trip to Bruges, staying at the Flanders Hotel. Our experience can only be described as excellent in all ways. From the moment we checked in to the moment we checked out nothing was too much trouble for anyone. Our room (No 350) was spacious and airy with an extremely comfortable bed and a large en-suite bathroom and separate toilet (perhaps a wash hand basin in the toilet room would be hygenic )?. The bed was "turned down" every day and clean towels / toileteries were replaced daily. Breakfast was as good as in any other continental hotel we have stayed in and we never felt "rushed" to leave the breakfast room. We have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to family and friends, and if we return to Bruges in the future then this excellent Hotel in an ideal location is where we would stay.

Don’t do it. Don’t stay at Flanders Hotel. The management at this hotel will not give you a break but take your money at every turn. I made a reservation for five nights, and when I explained that I must check out a day early, they stuck me with a $200 “cancellation” fee—even though I told them Tuesday about my Friday check out. Also, the whole reason I selected the hotel is because all rooms had Internet access, and it turned out mine did not. When I asked to be changed to a room that did, they said again, that would be extra money.
The people behind the desk were perfectly pleasant, but there’s a rat at the top telling them to gauge the customers at every turn. Don't be a victim as I was.

Once again, thank you all for your comments, we are most pleased that our efforts generally achieve their intended goal and naturally like to take on board any highlighted exceptions to this.

In this case, we foremost would kindly request for the guest to check their credit-card bill. As a gesture of good will, the night's stay in question was in fact never charged - despite of the cancellation terms agreed to when making the reservation. If it had been, the rate quoted would no way near have applied, no matter what the currency. Please also note that this doesn't normally involve a 'fee' - but rather a night's charge (when cancelling later than 4 days before 14:00hrs of the day in question).

As far as internet access is concerned, Flanders hotel generally benefits from occupying the premises of a former Dominican Monestary. A resulting drawback is however in the fact that some of the internal, medieval walls hardly allow for a WiFi signal to get around reliably. There are in all 10-15 rooms that do have wireless access (depending on the hardware used), as well as 19 that are equipped for wired, high speed access (without additional charge, network cables available for loan from reception against a small deposit). In addition to this, an internet terminal with free of charge, high speed access can be found on the ground floor of the hotel, where the wireless signal can also be used in nearly all public areas of the hotel. Similar to clear descriptions found elsewhere, the website where the clients concerned made their reservation states: "Free! Wi-fi is available in public areas and is free of charge" and "Free! Wired internet is available in some hotel rooms and is free of charge". Though we are for obvious reasons generally unable to 100% guarantee this, reservations made with the simple provision of a request to that extent will nearly always be allocated a room with wired or wireless access. Other than when we enjoy a full house - which fortunately is more often than not - and depending on the room type booked, we will also always endeavour to offer an alternative room, with internet access to guests who request this after arrival.

We look forward to welcoming our future guests to Bruges and would like to assure anyone that reads this that there are no additional charges for use of any of the hotels regular, indoor facilities (the fee for parking a vehicle is € 14 per day, which proves to be rather modest to anyone 'shopping around' for that facility at Bruges' city-center hotels).

Modern (which I found was a rare find amongst all the "old fashioned" hotels in Bruges) and well decorated, We stayed in a superior plus room, which was also tastefully decorated and modern, very spacious. No mini fridge, which was a bit inconvenient. Tip: ask for a room that is away from the street as even with the windows/doors/drapes closed the noise from the traffice and passers by is always there. Good breakfast spread, small but sufficient swimming pool for doing laps, lovely little garden, nice bar, decent service. Close to the city, easy and lovely walk, so central. Overall, nothing exceptional, but also nothing to complain about.
