We stayed at the Academie Hotel on a trip organised through Riviera Travel. The check in was the fastest we've ever experienced and found the reception staff to be very friendly and helpful. Our room was on the ground floor ovelooking a pretty courtyard. The room was spacious with a modern bathroom. Extra pillows and blankets were provided. There is a kettle and fridge in the room but limited tea and coffe and plastic cups. They charge for extra supplies so take your own mugs, tea and coffe and buy milk from the supermarket round the corner. Breakfast was what you'd expect in a european hotel, serve yourself from a varied selection.
The location was perfect for walking to the market square and local restaurants.
Avoid the Vivaldi restaurant where I got food poisoning on my last night and was very ill on the journey home.
We would definately stay at the Academie again.

Check in, although very busy when we arrived was quick & efficient, our room, No.127 was in the newer part of the hotel which we accessed through the courtyard.

They were just replanting the courtyard area which was a pleasant place to sit & enjoy a drink even more so once the planting was finished.

Our room was a good size, there was a little sitting area with two armchairs & a table which was quite useful. The bed was very comfortable & although the bedding was clean unfortunately it didn't smell very fresh which was a bit off putting. There was a fridge in the room which was handy for keeping milk fresh, we bought ours from the Carrefour supermarket just around the corner from the hotel.

Although there are tea making facilities provided you'd be well advised to bring some tea bags, coffee & sugar as only one of each are provided per person with the option to buy another 2 of each from reception at a cost of 2 euros! I've stayed in many establishments & have never met with such miserly restrictions on tea & coffee as this hotel. There's also a warning that you will be charged 10 euros for using the kettle for anything other than boiling water - what's that all about?? Also only plastic cups and holders provided for the tea/coffee, very poor considering this is a 4 star hotel.

Breakfast was surprisingly good, a decent selection of cold buffet items & pastries and the scrambled egg was very nice, a good start to the day.

The location was pretty much perfect, all the main attractions within easy walking distance, pack comfy shoes for walking on the cobbles though.

We hired bikes from the shop just up the road to the left of the hotel (Maria Strat) on the main drag to the Market Square & had a lovely ride into Damme approx 7.5k. Bike hire was 8 euros for 4 hours, top class bikes very easy to ride.

Despite the issue over tea making facilities I would use Academie hotel again due to it's location.

Great location but hotel facilities do not merit 4 star status. Cramped reception area for such a busy hotel and my room in A block had no view and under a sloping part of the roof. Bathroom of adequate size but toiletries not up to 4 star level. Breakfast very good although the cooked food was not very fresh. Plenty of breads, croissants, cold meats, cheese etc and self service with plenty of seating. No fresh hot drinks but a choice from a machine. Coffee a new taste for me.

At the beginning of May myself and hubby and two good friends did a 4 night trip to Bruges via P&O Ferry from Hull. We travelled up to Hull by car, parked in the Hull Ferry carpark on the Monday and boarded the Ferry to Zebrugge sailing at 5:30ish that evening and getting into Zebrugge the following morning around 8:30am. Then a coach transferr to the bus and rail station in the centre of Bruge where we walked to our hotel, The Academie, in around 15 mins. We realised it was too early to book in but the reception told us our rooms were ready so we dumped our bags in the rooms and left to go exploring. The weather wasn't brilliant but we had waterproofs and the sun was lovely and warm once it came out. We did a canal trip, a tour around the brewery, tasted lots of different beers at lots of different pubs, toured the Chocolate Museum, picked up some soveniers and did all the sights of Bruge. Our hotel was clean, exceptional value, very modern and the buffet breakfasts were good. There was a bar and a good sized lobby area where you could sit and read about places you were going to visit later. For the times when the sun came out there was an inner courtyard where you could sit and enjoy the sun too!
On the Thursday afternoon we collected our bags from the locked luggage room at the Academie, said our goodbyes and walked back down the side of the Lake of Love to the bus and rail station to catch the coach transfer back to the Ferry. After another great night aboard we arrived back at Hull around 8:30am, picked up our car and came home. At this point I must tell you how much the whole trip cost us - For 2 nights aboard a P & O Cruise ferry and 2 nights bed and breakfast at the Academie Hotel total cost for all four of us was £820!! Yes just £205 each!! Must just plug the travel company who arranged it all - Superbreak! Would definitely use them again. So any of you wanting a short break on a shoestring call Superbreak. Just need to say though the buffet meal on board the Ferry whilst it was excellent and you could eat as much as you liked, it wasn't the cheapest meal I've had and you had to book and pay for it as soon as you boarded the ferry.
We thoroughly enjoyed the whole trip - you must try it sometime!

I have stayed at the Academie on several trips to Bruges. It is perfectly located ,a ten minute walk from the station via the lovely lake Minnewater. On arrival the staff are extremely helpful and polite, even if your room is not ready you can locate your luggage in a safe locker room and head off into town, which is not too far away. The rooms are modern and are very clean and all have a free safe deposit box to take care of the valuables. The breakfast is more than adequate with a choice to suit any ones appetite. There is a new gymnasium if you wish to partake and the hotel bar provides a good choice of Belgian beers and spirits. There are plenty of amenaties near by with a visit to the Peaceful Bejinghof home of the pious women and an exellent trip round the Half Moon Brewery with a glass of the fabulous Brugge Zot to finish.

Room Tip: All have good views but our favourite overlooked one of many of Bruges older houses and gardens
