“Hotel Ter Brughe”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2013

We stayed at this lovely, quiet old hotel for 2 nights in September - so no mosquitoes or need of a fan! We had a fabulous room on the canal with a king size bed, lots of seating & even a glassed in nook directly over the canal. Great spot to people watch, read or just relax! Breakfast was great with everything from eggs & cereals to scrumptious breads & cheeses. Would definitely stay here again. Only thing I did miss was a stand up shower, but the bathroom was roomy.

Room Tip: We had Room #40 & not only was it spacious & lovely, it didn't have many stairs!

Some of the front of house staff were very good, some not so. We were not told that in order for the lights to work in the room, you had to use your room key to turn them on so that they worked the normal way. For the first few days, we had to continually turn the lights on, as they would dim after a short time. We had never encountered this before, and should have been told before we went to the room. We had a lovely room, but it was a lot of stairs to climb to get there. The hotel is very hard to find once you get into Bruges so make sure you have very good directions. Even our Sat Nav couldn't find it. There were no large towels in the bathroom. No shower. Only shower fitment in the bath which takes forever to fill. Bruges is a lovely area and you will enjoy it. There can be a lot of mossies in the hotel as it is near the canals. Beware, we did get bitten.

Our visit to the TER BRUGE was exceptionally hot when we stayed for six nights, our findings of the hotel staff, they were all very good with excellent local knowledge. I agree there should be more adequate provision with regrades to the dreaded mosquitoes, and rooms fans should be a priority. I would use this hotel... but not in the summer due the lack of fans, it is sad when you have a bad experience of somewhere, as I have often wondered why reviews are so wide ranging sometimes. I have seen the pictures of the stained furniture and I would have been very annoyed if that had happened to us. it is in a really good position once you get orientated to the ground have rated sleep as poor because it was so hot in the room.

Room Tip: keep in mind what facilities are available especially in old hotels which in Brugge there are plenty

My wife and I stayed for only one night, thank goodness. The female receptionist was not welcoming and had a brusk business like approach . The hotel is tired looking with poor paint/decor throughout. No air-con in the Hotel, no fans in the rooms, lots of mosquitoes from the nearby canal. The mattress we had in our (£133 per night) room was cheap and offered no support whatsoever. The towels are worn and off white. The staff are generally unhelpful and we got the strong feeling that the management just don't care about their guests. The breakfast room has cheap looking furniture and laminated signs worn their valued guests that they will be electrocuted if they attempt to remove bread from the toaster with a metal knife. We got the impression that this hotel has lost its way, what a shame it could be much better. The Hotel needs a completes re vamp, staff training and some investment if they continue to charge these prices for a hotel that is no better than a standard basic hotel. - be warned. we will forever give this one a WIDE BERTH!!!!!

The ancient building was right on a canal and picture perfect from the outside, but pretty tired inside. The unscreened windows let in mosquitoes that the provided electronic repeller did little to thwart. The windows needed to be open, as it was quite a warm summer evening and there was no air conditioning... I was just happy we were only on the first floor.
I had read reviews about paper this walls, but still didn't expect to hear conversations next door that could have been taking place in our room. Not to mention bathroom functions!
The furniture was poorly laid out (as an interior designer, I could easily see more space making arrangement possibilities), the thin matresses were just marginally comfortable, and the blankets on top of the beds were rather creepy looking. I went to the front desk and asked for a blanket cover (aka an extra sheet to toss on top of the blanket) and it was clear the desk person had never heard of such a thing. We left for a bit, and did find a folded sheet on top of our bed when we returned so we could make up the bed with said protectors.
There was a nice courtyard with tables and chairs we used when tired from exploring and did not want to go online from our cramped room, so that part worked out OK.
The rooms were worn, the bathrooms minimal (no shower, but a hand held head was there at least) using nothing at all special as far as surface materials.
I had asked for a canal view, but was told upon arrival that I had booked a budget room, and nothing else was available. For $175.00/night, it wasn't terribly expensive, but far too much for what we got as far as esthetics. The breakfast was adequate, and had lovely canal views in a charming room.
The best part was it was a five minute walk to the Bell Tower, shopping and best restaurants, very convenient to all Bruges has to offer.

Room Tip: The rooms on higher floors looked very quaint in the photos, but may well have been much too warm. T...

I stayed here for 3 nights with my daughter. What a lovely place! Our top floor room overlooked the canal and a little bridge. Beds were comfy. Everything was clean and adequate. The breakfast buffet had an excellent selection.
It is just a short (and picturesque) walk from the main square, but nestled on a quiet street so you are not disturbed by all the hustle and bustle of town.
We walked to and from the train station. It was a good 30 minte walk as the hotel is exactly on the opposite side of town from the station.
The ONLY suggestion for the hotel: please install a shower or at the very least a bath curtain. It was nearly impossible to take a shower in the bathtub without flooding the bathroom.
Overall: a great value and I would recommend it.

My husband and I really enjoyed our 2 night stay in the hotel. Our room was spacious and comfy and clean overlooking the canal. Buffet breakfasts were excellent and all staff friendly although reception staff were always different. Unfortunately hotel does not serve dinner. I would recommend this hotel.
