“Great location - charming old hotel”
Reviewed June 13, 2011

Old and charming hotel with great location next to a canal. Rooms lacking a bit - a few touches like a bigger TV, a waterboiler/coffee maker, a minibar, a safe, a hairdrier and a shower curtain would help a lot. Also the walls were paperthin - expect the neighbours to hear every noise you make. Nice to sit next to waterline in the basement breakfast restaurant with swans swimming two feet from your head.

Room Tip: Ask for top floor - rooms 21 to 23

Felt more like a bed and breakfast than a hotel. Had great old world charm. The rooms were huge with large windows. Breakfast consisted of basic cold foods like cereal, meats and cheese. They had wifi in the lobby and a cable for the room (there may have been a fee but it was reasonable). It is located off a canal in a quiet part of town, about a 5 minute walk to the Markt. There are hotels located in the heart of town so it just depends on what you are looking for. I felt it was a little farther out of the heart of town than I would have liked but my travel partner loved being in a peaceful, quiet part of town a few minutes out of the center. Overall I would recommend this hotel.

-Most positive:
Cozy place, specialy the nice breakfast room. Nice employers.

-Most negative:
No shower curtain!!! No hairdryer. Breakfast only average, no fruit, scrambled eggs, cakes, etc. Small and old TV with non-working remote.

I expected more from a 4 stars hotel.

We booked a 3 night mini cruise sailing from Hull on Friday evening and decided to book accommodation at Hotel Ter Brughe for Saturday night. We were very pleasantly surprised upon arrival as the hotel is situated alongside a canal in a lovely quiet part of the city, yet within easy walking distance of the main square. Our room was clean and fresh with beamed ceilings, nice decor and large en-suite. The included buffet breakfast was served in the vaulted cellar overlooking the canal with a good variety of food and drinks on offer. Staff were very helpful and hairdryers can be obtained from reception with no charge.

Room Tip: No lift so we were happy with 1st floor room.

Came here for a 4 day trip. Apart from being on the 4th floor (was quite fit by the end of it), the hotel was brilliant. Really quaint and very clean. Good breakfast, friendly staff and the manager could not have been more helpful. It's 5 mins from the market square - so perfect location. Would I go there again - definitely!!!

Ter Brughe hotel is a very nice, clean hotel. We had upgraded to a deluxe room overlooking the canal as it was a celebration and it was a good size with very nice bathroom. The buffet breakfast was very nice with plenty of choice and constantly being 'restocked'. The only downside is that there are no tea and coffee making facilities in the room, but refreshments are available to buy from the hotel bar which is always open. The hotel is ideally situated for exploring Bruges although it is on the other side of the town from the train station, it is only a 45 minute walk but can be a bit of a trek with a suitcase through the tourists over cobbles. Do have a map of the city with you! Highly recommended:-
Tea Room - De Proeverie on Katelijnestraat (near the Diamond museum). It is linked to the chocolate shop across the road so chocolates provided with every cup of tea/coffee, friendly service and very generous portions of cakes for reasonable prices - we went back each of the days we stayed!
Restaurants - De Gouden Kroes on Hoogstraat (road leading off from the Burg). Generous portions of local and well known dishes, great relaxed, intimate atmosphere and very friendly service. Also,
Minnewater on Minnewater (street). 3 course tourist menu for 14.95 euros with choices of starter and main course of local dishes. Sit and watch horse and carriages go by.
In all a great trip to this beautiful city.

I can't really add much to what's already been said about the Ter Brughe. It's a perfectly adequate place to stay for a couple of days sightseeing or possibly a short business visit, but to be frank, I wouldn't want to spend any longer here.
The room we were allocated was a 'standard' double on the first floor, very small, cramped and with no air con. The bathroom was clean and well maintained although there was no wall mounted shower, just a spay attached to the taps.. Towels were very worn and needed replacing.
The warm weather meant we had to sleep with the windows wide open which was not a major problem as the hotel is on a quiet side street.
In July and August though, things could be different as the proximity of the canal means there will be lots of mosquitos about. The hotel actually provides electric repellants to counter this.
Enough with the negatives ! The hotel is on the north side of the 'old town' within a ten minute walk of The Markt, the main square in Brugge, so you are well placed to see the sights.
Breakfast is taken in the basement restaurant which is a bit claustrophobic with tables very close together, but the choice of food was nice and replenished regularly.
A selection of boiled eggs, cheese, cold meats, jam, cereals, yoghurts and fresh bread rolls was available.
The Ter Brughe is a nice enough little place and has an olde worlde charm that is undeniable. But 4* ?............. I think not. I've stayed in 3* hotels that were far better.
A word or two about Brugge, take some loose clothing and comfy shoes. The old town is small, flat and easily explored on foot.
The loose clothing is not only to keep cool but to allow for some expansion ! The waffles served with fresh fruit and ice cream are very moreish, as are the hand made choccies.
Beer afficionadoes will need no advice from me about Belgiums favourite export. Those of you who don't imbibe regularly though, be wary ! Most Belgian beers, particularly the Trappist ones, are waaay stronger than what you are probably used to. One rubber leg inducing one I tried was was 10.5% alcohol, getting on for table wine strength !
