“Great for a one night stay.”
Reviewed February 4, 2014

My husband had booked this hotel for one night online for a birthday surprise for me and as soon as we arrived we were both very impressed and pleased at his choice. We didn't really know where to park as the hotel does not have it's own car park but as soon as we arrived we were given a map and directions of where to leave our car and were very happy as it was nearby and really secure and all for less than 10 euro overnight.

Our room was on the first floor so we had to pass the breakfast room to get to the lift. It did appear to have a "hostel" feel about it as mentioned in previous reviews but it was also clear that the hotel was in the process of being updated so not everything was 100% perfect. It was out of season and we appreciated that maintenance has to be done at some point. We were not affected by any of this. Our room, although it was a double, was quite small. The en-suite was really tiny, felt like it was the bathroom in a caravan or portaloo! But for one night we were not complaining. Had we stayed longer I would have requested a larger bathroom. The double bed was not a double but 2 singles put together which was fine except it also had 2 single duvets rather than a double or king size. Again, it was ok for one night but I would have asked for a switch if I'd stayed longer.
Breakfast was fantastic. Obviously no full English here but I really enjoyed it in comparison to a cooked breakfast. As much of whatever you wanted and available until 10am.
The canal view was lovely even though it was January and miserable and cold weather! I can imagine it is stunning during the summer months and hope to return to see this in the future. Our only mistake was not realising that in January most places in the town are closed as it is so quiet but it was great to be able to walk around the town without too many crowds and actually see what we wanted to see. I can't wait to return to Bruges and I will return to Hotel Ter Reien although I will request a larger room and stay longer than one night.

I thought I was at the wrong hotel when I compared the website photos to the site that greeted me. A backpackers crash pad masquerading as a hotel. And when they refused to give us another room that didn't have an overpowering smell of paint furnaces we decided not to stay. One minute after walking out the door they billed my credit card 100% of the room. Class.

Booked this hotel after reading reviews and studying the website...it appeared to tick all the boxes.... We arrived Saturday at 2.30pm, we were booked into room 16 which was ground floor across the court yard...as we approached we thought we had walked into a maintenance area but were horrified to realise this was actually the hallway to our room!!! Dirty towels were piled up on the floor, mop bucket & Hoover were propped against the wall; I use the term wall loosely as they were not actually plastered & there was no ceiling either, just wires and wood exposed... After stepping round the dirty towels etc, we opened the door to our room, the door hit the end of the bed and the room was dark, very small and stank of paint fumes... We requested a change of rooms but were told we couldn't, I asked to speak to the manager who was only available on the phone; his attitude was totally rude & was not compared to compromise in any shape or form... We left the hotel immediately and when we contacted the bank to cancel any payment , we were told that the hotel had literally just processed the full payment!!!! We have complained to the websites advertising this hotel, also to the tourist board & authorities in Bruges, providing all with the photographs taken to back up our complaint. We appreciate that renovations need to be done but never with paying guests sleeping in the middle of them. All we required was a little honesty when booking & professionalism when complaining, instead we were treated appallingly by all staff, especially the absent manager who thought his answer that no one was actually working on the renovations that weekend,so what's the problem... I'm now his problem & feel if someone is offering a back packers style establishment, then don't charge hotel prices as you are not a hotel offering such appalling rooms....we did book into a nearby hotel which did not misrepresent itself & offered exactly what it said on the website.

Room Tip: Whatever you see on the website, it's not what you get offered....photos are posted to emphasise...

As a hotel owner our aim is to serve the guests as well as possible.
Unfortunately it is not possible to satisfy all guests.
However, I can only say that there were no defects in the room she had reserved. The room is clean and meets the requirements set by the government according to our classification (2stars).
The renovations were just in the hallway and did not take place during the stay.
I would also note that other guests had an enjoyable stay and this complaint is an isolated case.

Yours sincerely

Stayed March 26-28. Such a quant, cozy inn in a perfect location. We drove at night from Brussels to Brugges, arriving after at 1am. We awakened the night manager, but they were so gracious and welcoming. We had a quadruple room with a canal view--it was perfect for our family of 4: my husband, myself and our two grown boys, ages 23 and 19. Breakfast was a great variety and satisfying. Another great Rick Steves recommendation..he's never let us down!

Hotel Ter Reien in Bruges is a comfortable and good hotel. The location is fantastic, very close near the centre, but not right into the crowded area. Reachable by car, although no parking space close by. The staff is friendly. At arrival, you get a basic map of the city, which you shouldn't loose because a replacement costs 1 euro. Your registration card gives you discount on a lot of musea and attractions in the city, so keep it with you when you're out! The front desk is closed after 21.00 hrs, that's not to good if you have any issues. Wifi is not standard in the rooms, but available for 5 euro, and is valid for you whole stay. So if you stay just one night, it's exensive, if you stay the whole week, it's cheap. They should make it standard. Breakfast is basic, but very good. Items are fresh and tasteful. It's a typical European breakfast, so with no sausages, scrambled eggs or bacon. We had a good room, although the first night very noise. That was because of a failure in the heating system, which was located right next to our room on the second floor. So it should be not structural. They worked on it during our stay, so it should be solved by now. Showers are very small, indeed and the door doesn't give much privacy. And we didn't get the bed we asked for. We asked a doulbe bed, but we got twin beds. But that were the only issues we came across. For the rest it's a comfortable, basic hotel.
Very near located are a few good and cheap restaurants, including Italian, Belgian and Indian (very basic interior, but very tasteful!).

Only a 5 minute walk from the centre of Bruges and with some fantastic restaurants nearby, this was a fabulous hotel for a short stay in Bruges. The hotel was clean, good value and managed by very helpful staff. Breakfast was great and included in the price, we both appreciated the boiled eggs and pancakes!
