I have visited the Prinsenhof a number of times, as we have been staying a few days in October for several years. Bruges is a lovely place for a short break, you can take the car but once you are there you can go everywhere on foot and we love it.
The first time we went, we took a package and travelled by Eurostar. The hotel was OK, but nothing to write home about. While we were there, we visited a restaurant, Den Anker in Katelijne Straat, and got talking to the owner. He recommended we go and have a look at the Prinsenhof before we left, so the next day that is what we did.
The hotel is down a quiet side street but very near to the main Markt Square. It is beautifully and stylishly decorated, with comfortable rooms and lovely bathrooms. We were shown around the public areas but were able to look at only one room, as the hotel was fully booked!
The following year we booked direct with the hotel, travelling with Hoverspeed from Dover to Calais, and have been doing the same ever since. It's such a convenient way to travel, and you can stock up at one of the big wine warehouses on your return. The journey from the Hoverport in Calais to the hotel takes just over an hour and is easy driving. The Prinsenhof always send directions which take account of any roadworks in Bruges itself.
Check in is efficient and straightforward, we park right outside the front doors and somebody takes the car round to the carpark at the back and parks it!
Then it's time for a hour relaxing in our comfortable bedroom before hitting the town!
A lovely breakfast is served in the pretty dining room, and although evening meals are not served, this is really no hardship in a place like Bruges which is packed with lovely places to eat.
One of the nicest and most atmospheric restaurants we tried is actually only one minure from the hotel, in the street behind the carpark. It's called 'de Vlaamsche Pot' and has great friendly staff and fantastic food.
The best thing about the Prinsenhof is the people of course. This place has such a wecoming feel and this is entirely down to Thierry and Katrien, the owners, and their friendly, thoughtful staff. We have noticed that, unlike in many other hotels there seems to be low staff turnover, so perhaps the happy feel of the place is down to a happy staff. Everyone seems glad to be there, and they'll bend over backwards to help in whatever way they can.
We'll be there again this October, and this time we're taking friends with us!
