Owner description: Bruges' City Hall (1376) is one of the oldest in the Low Countries. It is from here that the city has been governed for more than 600 years. An absolute masterpiece is the Gothic Hall, with its late 19th-century murals and polychrome vault. The adjoining historic hall calls up the city council's history with a number of authentic documents and works of art. A multimedia exhibition on the ground floor illustrates the evolution of the Burg Square.
Useful Information: Wheelchair access, Stairs / elevator, Bathroom facilities

This place was really a surprise to me! The exterior is beautiful with many statues and detail. After a fairly bland entryway, I expected more of the same blandness inside (after all, it is a hall of government). But I was very wrong! The main assembly room upstairs is a work of public art. There are floor to ceiling murals the whole way around that tell the story of Brugge. The handout in the room explains all of the panels and gives a true feeling for the history of the area / city. Just thinking about being one of the city elders, in a room like that, is an incredible feeling. It doesn't take long to get through this "museum" but it's well worth it!

This is a must for anyone visiting Bruges. The history, architecture and art are fantastic. If you are lucky you will also see some weddings taking place and join in with the clapping.

The town hall in the main square is magical. It really looks like it's out of a book of fairy tales. And at night it is lit up, and looks even more magical. There are also other buildings in this square that are quite impressive as well. We could have sat for hours just "being there." There is an interesting sculpture in the middle of the square and benches to sit on. The surface is stones/cobblestones, so pushing a stroller or wheelchair might be a little difficult, but not impossible. It's open air. Not sure about public bathroom facilities, but there are lots of restaurants and cafes on the square, opposite the town hall and down the little streets radiating off the square.

After you marvel the beautiful exterior, feel free to waltz in and take a quick look at the huge portraits (which I doubt that have any meaning to anyone beyond the Belgium historians) and then go in the magnificent Gothic hall and sit down and soak in the room where town councils were held for many many decades.

This is worth seeing even if nearly all the decoration dates from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
