Another large church, dedicated to St. James / Sint Jakob of Compostella (Santiago in Spanish).
Beautiful high vaulted interior, like something out of a Dutch painting. Exhibition staged by Musea Brugge of funerary goods / vestments / photos / artefacts - English title would be In the hour of our death. Guide only in Flemish (€6). Some beatiful church sliverware, statue of the Virgin and Child in ornate robes. One early Flemish masterpiece in side chapel. A couple of engraved brasses, one from 15th century, one from late 16th. Huge, ornate pulpit. Twinned with Sint-Salvatorkathedraal but a shortage of priests means that there are almost no services here. Pilgrimage church at some point - small brass scallop shell emblems of St. James are buried in the pavements locally. You might have to walk round three sides of the church to get to the front entrance.
