Recommended length of visit: <1 hour
Owner description: The Brugse Vrije is the former law court of Bruges. It now houses written history of Bruges as the city archives are based here. Take a walk through the old court to the renaissance hall, which was once the alderman's chamber. Here, the highlight is a monumental 16th century wood, marble, and alabaster fireplace known as the Emperor Charles V fireplace, designed by Lanceloot Blondeel. (tickets via Stadhuis)

“Such a lovely city”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

We spent a day in Bruges delighted by the tast Belgian Chocolate and waffels, happy to see so many horse drawn modes of transport. Visited the famous lace shops too.

“Must Visit!”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

This simply cannot be missed. It was so very interesting and some of the exhibits were so extraordinary. I found the art to be world-class and the hospital itself was breath-taking.

“Another building in Bruges with different styles”
Reviewed May 12, 2013

This is a very ornate building from the outside and was built in the 18th century. The guilded statues are very impressive but you have to look back on them if you are coming from the Burg. This smallish building was a palace which later became a courthouse but is now the office of the city council.

“The most intricately carved fireplace anywhere. Probably.”
Reviewed April 25, 2013

This is pretty enough on the outside – with the white stone picked out in gold, and dotted with gilded statues. The inside seems to be mostly a working council office, except for one room, where in olden times, the aldermen would meet to run the city and administer justice. This has what must be the most intricately carved fireplace anywhere, and some fine old paintings. Worth a look if you're into that sort of thing.

“Worth the visit hidden gem”
Reviewed March 28, 2013

Hidden gem. Gives you a feeling of the past and authentic non tourist trap. Escape the tourists groups for 2 euro or Brugge card. Definitely worth it.
