Owner description: Sint-Janshospitaal owns six masterpieces by the Flemish primitive artist Hans Memling, as well as many religious paintings and sculptures. Objects of applied art, such as furniture, silverwork, medical instruments, reliquaries, archive documents, and apothecary pots reflect 800 years of care. Sint-Janshospitaal is one of the oldest preserved hospital buildings in Europe. In the museum, you can learn more about hospital life in the past and how the wards would have looked then. Furniture, paintings, sculptures, silverware, and pewterware are the silent witnesses of the care for bodies and souls that took place in this hospital through the centuries. The building’s supporting framework is also unique and is one of the oldest and largest in Europe. The old apothecary’s and herb garden is also well worth a visit. In the hospital chapel, the focus is all on the work of the most famous of the Flemish Primitives: Hans Memling. This painter lived and worked in Bruges in the 15th century and created his most important masterpieces here, including the famous Shrine of St Ursula, which was painted specifically for Sint-Janshospitaal.

This is a mixture of medical instruments and works of art in the building of the old hospital. Presentation is a little haphazard and information in English not always available but it is worth visiting for the altarpiece and a few other great paintings. I think the experience will be improved if you do a little bit of reading on the place before the visit.

Amazing to think that this building was still in use as a hospital until the 1970s. A stunning setting for some amazing artwork that is beautifully displayed. A joy to visit time and time again.

When I went mid February, I was almost alone & so could spend as long as I wanted & walk round the St John Altarpiece to examine it closely. I found the staff very helpful & they left you alone to really look at the works.
I can throughly recommend it. By the way, get the multi museum ticket it's well worth it.I'm going again as I'm using the work mentioned for my studies.

While interesting and I'm always in awe of so much history, purely from a selfish point of view, there is some of the exhibit info that has not been translated into English. While it was good to see the objects, it is always better to have the written info as well. In fairness, the museum do provide English info sheets, it is just some of the individual exhibits that do not have English info.

It was a really interesting visit that combined history, facts and art. A lovely welcome and a pleasant atmosphere.
