Owner description: Sint-Janshospitaal owns six masterpieces by the Flemish primitive artist Hans Memling, as well as many religious paintings and sculptures. Objects of applied art, such as furniture, silverwork, medical instruments, reliquaries, archive documents, and apothecary pots reflect 800 years of care. Sint-Janshospitaal is one of the oldest preserved hospital buildings in Europe. In the museum, you can learn more about hospital life in the past and how the wards would have looked then. Furniture, paintings, sculptures, silverware, and pewterware are the silent witnesses of the care for bodies and souls that took place in this hospital through the centuries. The building’s supporting framework is also unique and is one of the oldest and largest in Europe. The old apothecary’s and herb garden is also well worth a visit. In the hospital chapel, the focus is all on the work of the most famous of the Flemish Primitives: Hans Memling. This painter lived and worked in Bruges in the 15th century and created his most important masterpieces here, including the famous Shrine of St Ursula, which was painted specifically for Sint-Janshospitaal.

...dark in here. We found it genuinely difficult to read the bumph that accompanied the exhibits. Suppose it has to be that way to avoid damage from sunlight. Still worth a go.

Very disappointed saw it in 40 mins max. No information, map or guides to what we were looking at. Plaques that were there the writing was tiny. Laminated card half way round gave some information on a few objects. One whole floor empty although was impressive roof.

Bruges card was reason went to see and so glad didn't pay.

Pharmacy was best bit but not much to see and unlikely to engage children or adults.

In the location the staff were the friendliest in that they actually engaged to smile and welcome.
Another mediocre attraction which requires heavy investment,

Toilet facilities smelt horrendous but functioned well enough.

There was a Picasso exhibition at the time we went which was located here. The building was fascinating, long corridors, big rooms, views from the top floor were spectacular. Didn't get into the hospital on this occasion though as more interested in Picasso's life etc. Opposite Church of our Lady. Closed on Mondays so plan ahead.

For any lover of Northern Renaissance art, this HAS to be the first place you should visit. Formerly a hospital it is the home of some of Hans Memlings finest works.
