“Interesting set of paintings.”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

We visited the Groeninge Museum on a very cold February afternoon - we weren't planning to visit however it was a good alternative to freezing outdoors. We made a good decision.

I dont know too much about Flemish painters or paintings however I found the exhibition very interesting. There was a description of each painting in different languages. If you have visited the Historium in Bruges you will recognise the painting around which it is all based. We happily spent 1.5 hrs walking round and taking it all in. The early rooms were my favourite - the 15th/16th Century.

You can also leave your bag/coat at the cloakroom for free which was a good idea. It wasnt too busy either which meant plenty of space to view and enjoy the exhibits.

“Must do in Bruges”
Reviewed February 15, 2013

Frankly our trip to Bruges had not lived up to expectations yet... the amazing Groeninge and sister museum, the Arentshuis changed that. The collection is perfectly put together with just the right amout of information to keep you engaged. The highlight of the museum is the collection of Flemish Prmitives and some famous works from van Eyck. Also look out for a couple of Brueghels, although blink and you may miss them.

“Average art museum”
Reviewed February 9, 2013

Admitted, we're not connoisseurs. However, most of the art seemed to be done by obscure Flemish artists with a couple of execeptions. There were also the type of exhibits where you think, "Im pretty sure I could have done that."

“Incredible art”
Reviewed February 3, 2013

We came to Groeninge Museum and at the same time found ourselves in The Hague and Antwerp. As it turned out the museums of these cities are being renovated and Groeningmuseum hosts paintings from them “to avoid that their precious collections are kept in storage for several years”. Superb collection of Flemish art! One of the halls is dedicated to Flemish primitivism: Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling and other artists. They refined painting techniques so much that you want to touch the objects in their canvases. Incredible skill! The museum is located in a tremendous old building, former Abbey, adjoined to another building by a glass gallery. At the exit you can vote for the painting that deserves your attention.
