Admitted, we're not connoisseurs. However, most of the art seemed to be done by obscure Flemish artists with a couple of execeptions. There were also the type of exhibits where you think, "Im pretty sure I could have done that."

“Incredible art”
Reviewed February 3, 2013

We came to Groeninge Museum and at the same time found ourselves in The Hague and Antwerp. As it turned out the museums of these cities are being renovated and Groeningmuseum hosts paintings from them “to avoid that their precious collections are kept in storage for several years”. Superb collection of Flemish art! One of the halls is dedicated to Flemish primitivism: Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling and other artists. They refined painting techniques so much that you want to touch the objects in their canvases. Incredible skill! The museum is located in a tremendous old building, former Abbey, adjoined to another building by a glass gallery. At the exit you can vote for the painting that deserves your attention.

“Art Novices”

Both my husband and I enjoyed a couple of hours wandering around gazing at these wonderful paintings. Even though we know nothing about the Art World we found it really interesting.

Perfectly sized with just enough so you can find something you really love but without there being so much you are overfaced. Paintings are organised in centuries with helpful staff and good explanations of techniques from each century.

I was stolen by The Madonna with Canon van der Paele by Van Eyck and spent an absorbed hour looking at the amazing detail and textures created by the amazing skill of the painter. I may have lingered too long....I attracted the attention of a security guard who may have feared for my mental health! Well well worth a visit.

“Come for the incomparable Flemish Primitives, stay for the grand sweep of the art of Bruges!”
Reviewed January 21, 2013

Last September, I visited the Groeninge Museum for the second time. I hardly remembered that I had seen anything there other than the famous Flemish Primitive paintings, the works of Jan van Eyk and Hans Memling and Rogier van der Weyden and so on. And to be sure, I once again spent time gazing at these works with wonder. I could just stay for hours and stare at van Eyk's "Virgin and Child with Canon van der Paele," for example - it is just perfect.

But after spending a good deal of time in the galleries with these early Flemish paintings, I was re-acquainted with the fact that there is a lot of other art, from all the succeeding centuries, on display here as well. And while none of the later works captured my imagination the way the early ones did, I was glad to see it as well. In particular, I loved seeing the late 18th century works, with their early Romantic ethos of people painted in a sumptuous manner, all the details looking just gorgeous.

While small compared to museums like the Metropolitan in NY or the National Gallery in Washington, or many other major European art museums like the Prado in Madrid, the Groeninge nevertheless is in my opinion one of the most important, and greatest.
