“Diamonds made serious”

Owner description: The Diamond museum sheds a fascinating light on Bruges' gem connection. Diamonds were traded and polished here as far back as the 14th century. The museum shows how medieval Bruges was the first diamond city in the world, and why the industry later moved to Antwerp. The museum features permanent and temporary exhibitions, a shop dedicated to all things diamond-related, and offers its unique Diamond Polishing Show every day.

“Diamonds made serious”

If you're like me when you think of diamonds you think of love and romance. This museum showed a very serious side of diamonds - and although interesting I wanted to be wowed by beautiful stones.

The museum exhibition is a series of rooms with mostly written information. There are few real diamonds on view. And even fewer that make you feel that you've seen something stunning.

The cutting demonstration was again very factual. Unfortunately only people at the front can see the machines working. We were at the back so didn't get to see it.

Unless your really interested in the commercial and historical significance of the diamond trade in Bruges I'd probable miss this one and do something else instead.

“Diamonds are forever!”

Loved this place! Detailed history of Bruges and the place Diamonds have always had in the city. Fun temporary exhibition with interactive displays and a polishing demonstration every day.

“Interesting but little overpriced”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2012

It cost 10 euro for entry to the museum and polishing demonstration,a little steep in my opinion. It is laid out well but very small,a couple of rooms with information on the history of diamonds. Not alot of jewlery which was disappointing. The demonstration was interesting, I got a look at something you will probably never see again. The demonstration is explained in a couple of languages and you can ask questions after. Tip- the demonstration is on at 12.30 but give yourself some time to read the history first.

“A tad pricey, but quite interesting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2012

If you're going to go to this museum, plan to include the polishing demonstration - its more than worth the couple of extra euros, and makes the rather steep entry price more worth it. The museum is well-laid out (for the most part, just make sure you hit up each room!) and most of the descriptions are in English (as well as Dutch). Interesting exhibits detailing the history of diamonds and all of the lore surrounding them... see replicas of some of history's most famous diamonds, learn how they are mined today and where they really come from (not just Africa). The receptionist was particularly friendly and gave good tips on seeing the rest of the city, as well.

Very interesting and comprehensive. Try to get there for the demonstration of diamond polishing and talk on the diamond industry (about midday).
