Owner description: The 115 metres high brick tower of the Church of Our Lady is a perfect illustration of the craftsmanship of Bruges' artisans. The church displays a valuable art collection: Michelangelo's world-famous Madonna and Child, countless paintings, 13th-century painted sepulchres and the tombs of Mary of Burgundy and Charles the Bold.

“Another Example of a Wonderful Church”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2013

Unlike England this large beautiful church was free to enter. There were lots of renovations taking place but this did not spoil the atmosphere of the church which had very haunting church music playing on CD. It was nice to just wander around and see several men actually at work!! This church is well worth a visit, especially when the renovations are completed.

The church seemed to dominate the Bruges skyline as everywhere we went we could see the tall steeple!

“A wonderful church with a sculpture by Michelangelo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 7, 2013

The altarpiece of the large chapel in the southern aisle holds a sculpture of the Madonna and Child created by Michelangelo around 1504.

In the choir space behind the high altar are the tombs of Charles the Bold, last Valois Duke of Burgundy, and his daughter, the duchess Mary.

There is no fee to enter the main church, however there is a charge to see the sculpture. Well worth it in my opinion.

There was some remodeling going on while we were there and some of the paintings could not be seen.

This curch has the second tallest brickwork tower in the world.

“Under-refurbishment”

Church impressive from outside, but everything of interest is hidden inside, including the Michelangelo statue, so don't make a special visit to see it at present
