We left the throng of massed tourists, crossed a small bridge, went through a gated archway and found ourselves in a beautiful green square surrounded by a chapel and the priory buildings. Discrete notices requested silence and respect, large groups of tourists were discouraged. A beautiful oasis of peace and quiet among the hustle and bustle of pre-Christmas Bruges.

I have visited this on previous occasions and it it is a charming quiet retreat from a by-gone age but still used for its original purpose - a sort of sheltered housing.

Walked through here knowing of its place in history. Free to enter and very peaceful except for the school kids on a trip that were walking through. Church was relatively plan but that is part of the simplistic appeal of this. If you are walking into town from the train station (either parking or arriving), worth directing yourself through here.

We went to see the grounds as you can't go inside the buildings but it's a very lovely place. Our guide was from Brugge and was really informative.

Wander over the bridge and enjoy the peace and seclusion of this walled nunnery. A small museum shows how the beguines lived, and we were fortunate enough to witness the nuns called to prayer at midday and sit through some of the service. A welcome change of pace from the Christmas markets.
