“Must see when in Bruges”

Very interesting architecture and atmosphere.
On certain days one can see the blood of Jesus here.
It was taken back from the Middle East after the crusades.
Who knows ... :-)

“Pay per view”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2013

The basilica is something interesting. First of all, from the outside it doesn't look like a church, you would walk past it if you don't know where it is. The facade is beautiful, dark stone with gold leaf ornaments. The inside is beautiful as well, nice glass in lead windows, a place to light candles, the atmosphere breezes ancient religion. The bittersweet taste is that there were 2 signposts to remind you of paying to support the church (now in general the Catholic church isn't poor), and as an extra, the priest inside was repeatingly chanting to please pay to see the vile.

“Makes you think”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2013

As much as I am a believer, why is the collection box a couple of feet away from the Holy Blood.
Some how this made it a bit tacky.
You felt you MUST pay to be worthy of a look and of course that is what it should NOT be about.
Why not have a box on the way out/exit, well away from the viewing area where people can give donations should they wish?

“A marvellous contrast”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2013

The two separate churches on this site provide a wonderful contrast. Both are beautiful, but very different. The upper church is gloriously and spectacularly decorated with amazing wall paintings and stained glass. Here is housed the relic from which the church takes its name. Here it can revered each day.
The lower, older chapel is beautiful in its austere peacefulness. A plain, simple and pious place.
The places are truly wonderful.

“Atmospheric.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 3, 2013

Free to go in to the church, which is stunning throughout. There is no doubt that there is a special atmosphere in this church, and its definitely worth timing your visit to look at the glass vial, containing the holy blood. A small donation is expected for you to do this. Worth a visit.
